Topic: Space Suggestions

First off, I really want to express my gratitude.  You guys did an awesome job and made a great game.  It's people like you that give regular gamers the opportunity to play great games and have awesome gaming moments.  In regards to space I'd like to suggest the following:

1. Throttle "set points" -  Being able to set the throttle thus not having to throttle full all the time in order to move.

2. Separate Yaw from Roll so that when one Yaw =/- you don't roll in conjunction.

3. Tweak the physics of space to allow for some more "slide" in the star fighters movements.  Its pretty stop and go.

4. More detail to the Cockpit HUD screens - 1st person rules in an Imperial or Alliance Starship - I love really having the detail and the feel of piloting one.

5.  Short range radar update.  Would help if targets in the immediate vicinity were always visible on radar.

6.  Boosters.  Being able to boost is really important in my opinion.  That combined with "slide" would really intensify the action.

I think thats it.  These are just ideas off the top of my head.  This game rocks!  Also, any ideas on when patches and updates are coming?  I can't wait for new maps, re skins, more textures/mapping etc...  Pretty exciting stuff.

Re: Space Suggestions

I think if you use boost in conjunction with really sensitive rudders, you can do a nice slide as it is.

I have definitely seen instances in testing of chasing an enemy and having them do the space equivalent of a "powerslide" to get out of my way for a little while.

I'd rather see the space fighter physics not get too touchy and "realistic", but I guess they could always be fooled around with a little.

Re: Space Suggestions

Star Wars doesn't use Newtonian physics to begin with, so (oh noez!) that would mean breaking canon (oh noez!). Besides, the RoK alpha had proper Newtonian physics and dogfights just weren't anywhere near as fun as the almost WWII style of FS space.

Arrgh, yar... arr ar arrgh!

Re: Space Suggestions

The Warp mod we worked with under Yoshi Boy was meant to have Newtonian physics. That is, you could apply thrust to start moving, then let go of the thrust and turn the craft around to fly backwards. Power slides were possible, too. But no, while it is awesome, it's not a Star Wars thing.

Re: Space Suggestions

Technically, none of the space flight or combat is possible according to Newtonian physics.  I am referring to a particular "feel" regarding Starship handling in Space.  Don't get me wrong, the Space feel of First strike is great and I have a ton of fun playing it.  I guess in generic terms I am saying it feels a little bit stop and go for lack of a better description.  If you're talking strictly Newtonian physics then none of the space flight in Star Wars or most every space game are any where near accurate.  Technically you'd need thrusters on every side of the ship at multiple angles in order to turn or maneuver at all.  (I think probably an accurate description would be a Raptor from BSG... I'm not at all suggesting anything like this.) I really wish I were better informed and I could explain what I mean in clearer terms.  I can compare what I am suggesting to say Wing Commander or The Jump to Light Speed expansion of SWG.  No it's not accurate and I don't suggest making it accurate according to Newtonian physics (which isn't possible as it would be a total revamp) but I do think maybe tweaking some elements relating to handling and how it "feels" would be great.  I don't think much needs done, like I said I love it and it's a blast.
