Topic: graphics card help, for the whiz's

hello, im looking to buy a new graphics card as mine is a bit outdated and doesnt do the job, i got a few questions as to what i should look for.

1. Do the MB on the card make a big difference?, because you see alot of cards with less mb, that are more expensive.

2. Does the Memory Data Width "Bits" matter alot?, or it isnt a big importance? aka 24, 32, 64, 128 etc.

3. There are the Clock speeds 2 of them labeled in Mhz, "Core Clock" and "Memory Clock", are these also significant?.

4. And finally there is the DDR which is labelled 2 and 3 and so on, ive been told these are the versions of the DDR, and that the DDR3 is quite new and with xp it has issues?.

Any more information on this subject, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Mark.

nah ddr3 is out but as i said people say its VERY new so it still has problems

Re: graphics card help, for the whiz's

Don't worry about any of this. Clock speed and other BS is irrelevant simply because the cards can be compared more easily card-to-card than clock-speed-to-clock-speed. The only things you need to look at are:

1. Type of card
2. amount of VRAM.

#2 only comes into play at really high resolutions.

If you're buying a graphics card the only real choice now is the 8800GT. Cheap, extremely powerful.

Re: graphics card help, for the whiz's

well im only looking for something that will run this game in full and be nice and smooth, so how about instead of asking all the questions how about people tell me what cards they are using, that run the game with full settings and runs smooth.

Re: graphics card help, for the whiz's

Please don't listen to carbon.  Not to be a dick, but it sounds like you have NO idea what you are saying.
1. Of course you want to look at the type of card how else would you know what your looking at.
2. VRAM is probably the last thing you want to look at when buying a card.  It really does not designate how good a card is (more=/=better).

The important things to look for in a card are all the things you said not to look for.  Amazing.

You want to look for:
--Who made the card (not nvidia or Radeon),  but 3 party companies who use their chipsets such as: XFX, eVGA, etc.
--GPU speeds, vRAM speeds(most important)
--heat issues
--size of the card(will it fit in your tower and still have good ventilation)
--optimal power consumption

XFX 7800GTX,  AMD 4000+,  2g 400mHz
I run at 1280/1040 resolution
All dynamic effects off
90+ FPS---hardly ever dipping below 80.
