Not to be picky... but the probe in the movie self-destructed. It had completed its mission, and had subsequently been detected - self-destruction was the only real option left.

That said... the fact that the droid blew itself up, rather than tackle a guy with a blaster and a Wookie, would indicate that they're not intended to be combat droids. My suggestion would be to make it better at scouting - give it a zoom function, and maybe boost its scan range (or give it a recharging, wide-range sensor ping) but weaken its gun and cripple its armour. It's a one-use item, yes, but it should be kept alive by pilot skill, not by wicked self-defense capabilities.  Make it something that the Rebels would be willing to over-extend in order to kill. Now that would be more like a Probe droid.

Maybe that, and make it respawnable. That way you could use it more than once, but it wouldn't be like a hovering AT-ST.

It is respawnable, the spawn time is just rather long and if you enter the building when another probe is out there you're pretty much out of luck because there is no way to tell if you're waiting for it to respawn or if it's in use.

I think probe droids are fine as they are.

I like this idea.

Probe droids are fully capable of defending themselves, which is why they have a blaster cannon AND a self destruct.

In a situation on Endor where it's their own base and the battle is already going on (In space above), they don't much care if the information they found is discovered by the rebellion.  They already know the Empire knows they are there.  So, they don't blow themselves up.  Really the only reason for Probe droids on Endor is to navigate the perimeter of the base complex and locate and subdue or at least delay any intruders.

In a situation such as Hoth, the probe droid had already located that there was in fact a Rebel base there, so its mission was complete.  It self destructed to prevent the Rebels from knowing whether or not it had in fact discovered the base, so they wouldn't just run before an attack could be staged.  Yes, this did not work, but only because the Rebels were extremely cautious and assumed the presence of the droid meant their base was compromised, whether it located them or not.

Probe droids are lightly armored, but they have a bit more armor than your average rebel soldier and their Blaster Cannon is a bit more powerful than your average gun.  So basically, one on one a Probe droid should be able to win out against a soldier.  Two on one the droid will probably lose, but still delay the troops.  Also, as an extra note, some Probe Droids are actually fitted with deflector shields as well.

Yes, a self destruct could be added, but it's not likely anyone would really tactically suicide in any scenarios that can be constructed in a game like this.

Bring up the full map and look for the little blue icon that represents the probe droids location. wink
