Topic: Default squad names

I think it would be cool if the default squad names were colors, and instead of being called squad they were called squadrons, on space maps.

Re: Default squad names

You can't have one string for land maps and one for space maps, sadly. And either way, you're most often not organized in squadrons in the first place, it's more like one squad for all bombers, one for all cap ships, and so on.

I'm in favor of calling squads fireteams, myself (because it fits the definition far better, that is, not because FH2 does it, and in fact I had the idea long before downloading the mod anyhow), but of course that'd clash really badly with the space maps. Maybe something more neutral would be better, like 'Unit'.

As for squad names, only the Rebels colour-coded their flight groups, so I'm against the idea. It'd also look a bit stupid on ground maps.

Re: Default squad names

Even the Rebels didn't really color code their groups.  They only did it in some rare circumstances before actual squadrons were formed.  Then they too had names of their own rather then simple color designations.  I wouldn't be opposed to having some actual names for the default names instead of Alpha, Bravo etc.  But colors really isn't true to Star Wars as much as you might think.

Re: Default squad names

It really depends. On the one hand, using Greek letters for squad/unit/fireteam/whatever names is kinda strange, because I don't remember the Greeks being anywhere in Star Wars. On the other hand, though, it kinda meshes well for new players coming over from Vanilla. Also, given the people on this forum (:P) it might be easier to let sleeping dogs lie, rather than stir up open warfare over a suitable replacement. It works now, mainly because everyone's either a) ignores it or b) doesn't notice it. Although, if there's a better option out there...

If this is a signature... why doesn't the bank accept it on cheques?

Re: Default squad names

Custom squad names, there is your answer. Want a spiffy name like Red Squad, type it out yourself.

"RED SQD"

There's your fix, take it or leave it smile

Re: Default squad names

Pity you can't rename squads after creating them. I played through an entire round of Mos Espa with a leftover squad from Taloraan called 'Cap Ships' big_smile . Also damned annoying that the names have to be so damned short, and that you can't have a description or list desired classes or... [trails off]
