Topic: Now Here's a Subject That Will Get a Negative Outcry...

...but you hard liners are gonna have to deal with it anyway for the good of the community.

Your regular, passing interest playing who is familiar with Star Wars (ya know all those people that probably don;t visit or at least comment on forums?) want Jedi. Therefore, no other reasons needed...they need to be added. Period. The end. I would bet a solid share of my bankroll that this would grow the community considerably.

How to implement it? That's a 2 part question:

Question #1: How will this be put into effect without having half the field a bunch of Jedi?

Well, the Jedi class would obviously be a pick-up kit or, as in Forgotten Hope 2, some kits are listed as limited, with the limitation being dependent on the number of players currently on the server.

Question #2:

What powers do the Jedi get?

They would only have a "knife" slot that would be their lightsaber and would be a 1 hit kill. They would walk at sprint speed and sprint at twice that. Beyond that, the powers are dependent on what is possible given the limitations of the game engine. A limited ability to block blaster fire is clearly one power that would important. Another might be a "UAV" that only the Jedi can see, given them a greater sense of where enemies are. Beyond that, implementation of the other household powers would be desirable. Force Push, Force Lightning etc.

The class wouldn't be overpowering given their limited attack range, though potentially somewhat more powerful, offset by the limited # allowed on the field at once. I suggest no more than 1 for each side on a 16 player server, perhaps allowing 2 each side with 32 players etc...

I know, I know, you all hate it...but suck it up for the greater good of this mod.

Re: Now Here's a Subject That Will Get a Negative Outcry...

Uh...no. The reason (well...as far as i know) that both GC and this mod don't have jedi is because, like all other battlefield games, this is centered around AVERAGE troopers. Nothing special, like a general or a hero, just average, everyday troopers. Jedi aren't average. They are special. +they are overpowering, really. neutral
Also, go look at the old pages, like, pages around 30-49 where millions of people have mentioned "Can we have jedi?" or "Why not to have jedi" or "Problems with jedi" over the months/years. (ok...maybe not millions.)

Re: Now Here's a Subject That Will Get a Negative Outcry...

OK, this discussion has been had over and over both on these forums and in those of First Strike's disowned cousin, Galactic Conquest. I can't predict the future, but I have a strong feeling (and high hopes) it's not going to happen.

Was there anything else? Seriously, making an FPS game and not including those lightsabre-wielding wizards from a certain high tower on Coruscant is one of the greatest innovations I've ever seen in any FPS to date tongue . Except Dark Forces did it first, but who the Heck remembers them.

Your regular, passing interest playing who is familiar with Star Wars (ya know all those people that probably don;t visit or at least comment on forums?) want Jedi.

Lots of them do, yes. However, a lot, such as myself, don't want Jedi, and I find it great that First Strike allows me a chance to play without them (see above graph).

Therefore, no other reasons needed...they need to be added. Period. The end. I would bet a solid share of my bankroll that this would grow the community considerably.

Game development isn't only about pleasing the highest number of players.

Question #1: How will this be put into effect without having half the field a bunch of Jedi?

Answer: you can't. The mod doesn't feature Commanders, nor does it feature pick-up kits (cue campaign speech from TY wink ). You could replace the Officer class with a Jedi, and maybe that's an idea for a Prequel Trilogy map, if the devs ever get that far, but then I have a feeling everyone would start their own squad just to play as a Jedi, and as such the devs would have to limit the Officer (Jedi) class to those with a sufficiently big squad, hampering play for the smaller fireteams.

Question #2: What powers do the Jedi get?

That's another problem. If you don't give them more powers than the average player, people don't play them. If you do give them more powers, they get overpowered, no matter how few of them there are. You can balance it out by limiting their attack potential, but then again, this makes them little different from regular Officers, who are already in the mod.

In conclusion, I think the only way you'll ever see Jedi and Sith in First Strike will be if they're added with a third-party mini-mod.

Uh...no. The reason (well...as far as i know) that both GC and this mod don't have jedi is because, like all other battlefield games, this is centered around AVERAGE troopers.

Exactly.

Re: Now Here's a Subject That Will Get a Negative Outcry...

Here's my tuppence:

1) Swordplay in FPS is just crap, whether it's a broadsword or a lightsaber, because it can only be done properly in third-person. The Jedi Knight games just about pulled it off, as does it's multi-player and it's mods, although since you're all Jedi no one is special (although I mainly stuck to blasters online and still managed to own all the jeds :-P).

2) The FS battles are supposed to be in the time-frame of the movies (and I'm presuming mainly around eps 4-6), therefore your scope for Jedi/Sith is somewhat limited to, er, two. Namely Luke and Vader, as these are the only two in existence at this time (with the exception of Yoda, but he's stuck in a swamp).  The Jedi Knight games were set long after the events of ROTJ, when there were apparently lots of annoying Jedi milling around who could train and somehow become Jedi without even a drop of midi-chlorians in their blood, so that's ok.  In addition to this, REAL Jedi/Sith are supposed to be VERY powerful, so if you were to make the action as realistic as possible (as is the aim of Battlefield games), any Jedi Knight on the battlefield would just level the opposition, and that's just not cricket now is it?

I don't want Jedi in a Battlefield mod because it's all about battlefield tactics, and Jedi Knights would just spoil the feel of the game.  Frankly, I couldn't care less what your 'passing interest' fans think, they can f*ck off and play Movie Battles or Battlefront (if they're utter morons) if they want to play Jedi-Lite CTF.  Battlefield/Star Wars devotees want a realistic battlefield experience, not a bunch of people with no real Jedi abilities swinging light-swords around.

Re: Now Here's a Subject That Will Get a Negative Outcry...

I think I would quit playing if there was jedi.

there are plenty of other games out there where you can run around as jedi.

If you want this game to flourish it will have to be by word of mouth through star wars communities. not by putting jedi in the game.

I guess if the dev team wanted a game that a million people would play they could have put out another WOW clone,a game where everyone wins,or even trumpet hero.

thanks devs for making a war game that takes place in my favorite universe.

pretty neat someone having an idea and sticking to the core idea
