Topic: Custom Avatar?

Anyone know of any programs i could download to make a custom avatar? Paint is really...well...old...
Granted it's been around for more than 10 years and hasn't changed at all, i could use something better...

I've heard this free program, GIMP is pretty good.  Never tried it tho...

I know a free program thats just like photopshop its called paint.NET free download and its great look it up.
