Topic: Artillery

Hey

Well, ive noticed that there is very little form of Artillery with in First Strike. Since artillary takes quite a big role in real combat it may make First Strike combat a little more intresting with the use of a form of Artillery such as a mortar cannon or some thing simular.

This would probably be most benificial on Tatooine Mos Espa, Since at the begining of a game normaly the imps begin setting up turrets across the dune hills in order to bombard the city. Being able to place a mortar cannon and opperate it would greatly change the way the battle is played out.

Not too sure how it would work but, Its possable that maybe a officer would be able to place/construct a mortar cannon (Artillery Gun in placement), The Mortar cannon would have limeted ammo simular the the current gun in place ment, The mortar cannon would fire a single round every few seconds and would have a reload time of 3-5 seconds. Its primary and only source of ammo would be proton grandes, simular to the rebel support grandes.

Had some time to kill so made a very basic model of what it may look like.

Obviously its missing some textures and its pretty basic, but it gives a ruff idea.

Any way it may be some thing to consider in a future patch.

-Thanks.

Re: Artillery

Well I dunno about artillery, but some other choices of deployable weapons for the officer would be a great idea!

Re: Artillery

Awesome models by the way. I think the main thing missing from most games is the ability to call in artillery, using coordinates. So, there would be a mortar crew (designated squad) with a max of like 2 players. Other squad leaders would tell the mortar crew the coordinates for the strike(using something the commander artillery map) and the mortar crew would send in the mortars. If implemented well, it would make the mortar crew a target for the other team, so they will have to find a well hid position, but close enough to be useful to their team (meaning a limited range on the mortars).

Re: Artillery

Maybe you could use the squad leader map to choose areas to bombard, and for the person on the mortar, an icon on the 3D map would tell the direction and distance of the target.  Perhaps the mortar could be a "vehicle", in which it has to be "entered".  It will have a special HUD for rangefinding, and limited ammo.

Or they just make artillery vehicles...

(Edit) STARSIEGE: Tribes had a nice, but never used feature in it's gameplay.  One guy would have a targeting laser pointed at, say, an enemy solar panel.  Then teammates with mortars would have an icon on their HUD telling them where to aim for a direct hit.  The only reason it flopped was there was no teamwork in Tribes, but the FS team strives for squadplay.  If something like this could be implemented for grenade launchers, mortars, etc., it's sure to be a success.

Re: Artillery

As im sure safe-keeper will point out, the heavy weapons class has a mortar but very few people use it for some reason. I have found it somewhat usefull on Espa, but it sucks on Endor.

Re: Artillery

Here is a view of the person targeting in Tribes...

And here is one of the person firing.

Maybe in FS when the squad leader uses their binoculars, an icon similar to that in the second image could appear on the HUD of the person with the mortar.  This could greatly add to the need for teamwork in the game.

(Edit) Actually, 2 icons appeared on that line, on for firing low, and one in case the person needed to fire high in order for the mortar shell to clear a wall or building.

Re: Artillery

As for your mortar, it's a nice model, but we already have a light mortar in the mod (the HWS class' Packered Mortar Gun), and I think it suffices. As for heavy artillery... maybe, maybe not. Wait and see wink !

Edit: Stardestroyers, I see you're starting to know me pretty well already tongue .
