Topic: 1.2 > all servers have an older version than me?

Which is odd, since shattered planet is supposed to be playing 1.2, and a lot of the server staus pages show them running the new maps... but I can't join any of them. is this because I'm running the 2142 1.5 beta?

Yes, you need 2142 patched to 1.4 in order to play.

Yup. Afraid you need to uninstall BF2142 and patch it to 1.4, then reinstall FS 1.2.
