Topic: Need some serious help!!!

Ok, I've installed BF2142 completely from scratch 3 times. Then I downloaded the full 1.2 First Strike Client. I patched my BF2142 to 1.4 and then I installed First Strike. I can open First strike and see the menu's and I can see the servers. Everytime I either try to join a game or host a game, the map loads and then the whole game shuts down. I have tried pretty much everything that I can think of. This happens for ALL maps. The video's and screens of this mod look awesome, but sadly I can't participate. Any idea what might be going wrong?

My specs:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ Dual Core 2.5 ghz
Nvidia Geforce 8500 GT 512 mb
4 GB DDR2 800 mhz RAM
1 terrabyte Hard drive
Windows XP Pro 32-bit

I can run the original BF2142 with everything maxed, so I'm a little unsure what the problem is. I've made sure that all my drivers are up to date as well...

Ok, I wanted to update on what I've tried so that I don't sound like an idiot newb. I have read the forums (like 10 pages of them) and I've tried many different potential solutions.

I originally clean installed BF and installed the 1.25 patch like the manual said to. Obviously all the servers were red. Then I uninstalled everything including FS and installed again using 1.4 this time. I can see all the servers and they're all white. I click on them and it goes to the loading screen. As soon as it finishes loading, the game closes and I'm back on my desktop. I've noticed that many people had this problem, but it was a combination of Nvidia and Vista. I'm not using Vista, so there really doesn't seem to be a solution there... I also read that you might need to update punkbuster. Well, doesn't punkbuster usually kick you after you've actually started playing? My problem doesn't seem to match a punkbuster issue (correct me if I'm wrong). There was also someone that said that computers that have 2 gigs of RAM or more needed a special .dll file to fix the game. They only solution to that problem that I could find was for Vista. Still not sure if that is the problem. I had this problem occur once before on a different game, and it was because the game was trying to load a resolution that my computer didn't support. I've set all my graphic settings and resolution to the absolute lowest that they can go, and it still doesn't fix the problem. I'm not trying to run single player. I installed the mini single player mod, but I run into the same problem in the same place. I tried hosting on my LAN and the same problem occurs. This is for ALL maps. Someone mentioned that it might be a directx issue, but I've got 9.0c on my system, so that seems unlikely.

Could it be that I'm running 1.2 on my computer and all the servers are running 1.1? I'm getting absolutely no error messages. I don't think that my shortcut is the problem because the mod opens just fine. Anyway, any help or suggestions would be appreciated!

No, Servers are all 1.2 now

It may be the shortcut.
After i reneamed a BF2 Mod in the mod directory i have had the same problem:
Mod starts, but when joining a server -> CTD

Try to delete the shader files in :\...\My Documents\Battlefield 2142\mods\FirstStrike\
the shaders will be new created (takes up to five minutes)

Disconect your PC from the internet and then try to start a local server, if this is working look for your network and router settings.
(Local Server chrashes on my machine if i am connected, it works when i am not connected ... Lol)

Some other things:
Downgrade to 2 Gig -> if this works, tweaking the XP (size of the page file, ect...) may help to use 4 GB

8500 GT ? is this card passive cooled ?
-> driver version, Temp ?

Re: Need some serious help!!!

Ok, this is what I've got: This is the info from my Shortcut,

Target: "C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\Battlefield 2142\BF2142.exe" +modPath mods/FirstStrike +menu 1 +fullscreen 1

Start: "C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\Battlefield 2142"

I noticed in the example that the guy posted about the shortcut fix, that instead of BF2142.exe being the target file, it was BF2142launcher.exe (I don't have this file). I've got a BF2launcher.exe in that folder, but the actual file that launches is the BF2142.exe. I'm not sure if this makes a difference. I'm also not sure why I don't have the file that everyone else seems to have. I'm using a full retail version of the game that I bought. So, it's not like I downloaded an illegal rip or anything.

Ok, as far as the shader thing, I went to this location on my computer:
C:\Documents and Settings\Josh\My Documents\Battlefield 2142\mods\FirstStrike

There isn't a shaders folder. The only thing in there is the cache folder (which I emptied).

Here's the info on my Nvidia card (I downloaded the latest driver yesterday):

I'm still having problems guys!!!

EDIT:

I did downgrade my RAM to 2 gigs and it did not help. I also tried renaming the BF2142.exe to BF2142launcher.exe (still didn't work).

Re: Need some serious help!!!

Have you got the view distance set to 100% ?

Re: Need some serious help!!!

Yes, View distance is set to 100% (I did see that hint in the fourms)

Re: Need some serious help!!!

I'm guessing you already tried it with lowered GFX settings?

Re: Need some serious help!!!

Yeah, I've lowered everything to the absolute minimum settings. It's got to be something really stupid and simple. I can't even think of anything else to try...
