Topic: 'Just like beggars canyon back home...'

As Luke enters the trench full throttle, Biggs expresses concern that his friend may not be able to pull up in time.
Luke's torpedoes arc down into the port though- he fires them straight out and once above the port they angle themselves in. Flying straight, he is then able to nose up and pull out.

In FS, what with physics and non locking torps we're required to shoot down into the hole to get a hit- which for me results in Biggs' fear being realised.
My question is thus:

Has anyone ever killed the deathstar and pulled up after?

Yeah, I've sunk the titular torps and pulled out in time to tell the tale.

Re: 'Just like beggars canyon back home...'

At first glance that short scene does seem a bit odd.  On a moon sized space station with it's own source of gravity, how do a pair of torpedoes traveling horizontal to the surface at high speed suddenly get "sucked" into this exhaust/venting port?  It doesn't really sound like there is any type of fan in there creating a suction like force.  I think George was trying to portray Luke's new life as a young jedi.  Using the force to "push" the torpedoes into that small port.  So now all we need is the ability to use 'Force Push' when the torpedoes fly over the venting port. tongue

Thats because Star wars fans don't suck- Star trek fans do big_smile

I would have assumed that an exhaust port would expel heat- if anything they would have been repelled by an airstream.. or radiated heat.
They could have homed in on the heat source tho.. the port was supposed to lead to the main reactor, presumably in a straight line. The rebels would likely have accounted for this with heat seeking torps.

Anyhow- how'd you pull it off Talon? Did you have to snipe at the port from a distance away or was it some complicated snapshot at the bottom of a swoop?

Dind't you see? Obi-wan helped Luke guide the missiles with the force.

No , No , ...

The fractal comparator riding in the nose of the torpedo, picks up the exhaust tachyon signature and follows it into the port, then the fire control holds detonation while the thing richochet down the tubes. They never really make it all the way down , they strike the first bend in the exhaust flume , about 1/2 way to the center. This happens to be the layer of the Station where all the cooling radiators meet the gaps within the Power generating center.  So, as the torpedo strikes the radiators, mechanical failure of the structures that connect the center to the outer layers across this void collapse toward the center , crushing the radiators and in turn exploding the cooling lines and containers , further contributing to the destruction of the center power reactor within minutes.

Yeah. What he said. ^^

As for the torp shot, you don't have to actually physically get the torps down the chute. There is a very small target point just above the port, so if you manage to hit that it counts as a successful hit, you don't have to divebomb the thing from above.
