Topic: Stats: haters & whores

I didn't want to hijack the 'Officer Kit' thread, so I've started a new one. I've been meaning to comment on this subject for a while, and some of the nastiness coming out in that thread has finally set me off.

I've never really understood why some people hate game stats so much. It's obvious from some of the insulting comments in the 'Officer Kit' thread and others on the forum that there are quite a few stats haters around. Why? You can play and enjoy First Strike without ever caring for or looking at the stats. What difference does it make to your game if you play with people who simply appreciate the fact that their time and actions in game are recorded?

Stats only add to my overall gaming experience. For example, I can monitor my K/D ratio and try to improve it. That basically means I'm going to try and die less and kill more often – but hang on, I've always tried to die less and kill more often, whether or not the game was ranked! I'm not trying to improve my K/D ratio because of the stats, it's just that stats add the means by which I can measure my performance.

You'll notice all the 'I', 'me' and 'my' in that last paragraph. That's because the only stats that matter to me are mine. Oh, I occasionally have a look at other players' (particularly those who regularly pwn me!), but I'm so used to being ranked nowhere with a gaggle of full timers occupying the top few hundred spots that my position relative to others has always been pretty unimportant. I certainly don't get hung up on other people's stats. I can't deny it's been gratifying to see my name at the head of the First Strike leaderboard on a couple of occasions, but it's still pretty unimportant. I know it's only because I've played more than anyone else – since 1.2 anyway.

And that's one of the reasons why I don't think there are any so-called stats whores playing First Strike. I work 40 hours a week and spend another 6 getting there and back, so if there were, I wouldn't be able to get anywhere near the top of the leaderboard! I'm just chuffed to bits that no full timers have taken a liking to this game – yet!

Please note the complete lack of insulting language hereabouts. I respect your right to not like stats. Please tell me why without resorting to name-calling.

The reason people dislike stats is they feel it detracts from teamwork. For example, let's say you're on Mos Espa and a player in your squad is trying to get his paws on the Sniper Proficiency Badge (if there is such a thing). A trio of AT-ST's with an escort of stormtroopers comes strolling around the corner and two players get vaped. You, as Squad Leader, notice that your squad is short on antitank weaponry and order the two players who conveniently died to respawn as HWS with rocket launchers. The answer: "Hmmm, nah, sorry, I'll stick with the sniper rifle a bit longer, I need the sniper badge".

That was the argument then, anyway. I realize Teamwork points are important to FS stats, and I don't know how much stats turned out to affect teamwork, but there you have it.

K/D ratio is all that really matters to me, too. I try to kill more than I die, which is not really that easy, and the rest (kill counts, ranking, badges, etc.) don't matter to me.

Because of the stats I've seen people just running around with a knife the full game for their knife badge.  I see them ruinning around only using Proxy Mines for the Explosive badge.  I've seen them using their trooper pistol, when they have an E-11 for their pistol badge. 


I like the stats, I use them for what John does.  I check my own, and those I fight against alot.  But these people who sit and attempt to whore the stats annoy me.  The reason you are stick near your top-spot, John, is beacuse those people who DO whore are extremely stupid.  They don't realise that a Virbroknife isn't 1 hit kill and get blasted to pieces in the event they even managed to get ONE stab in.

Those people don't learn, and will spend multiple games trying to get their pin, leave, then come back the next day and try again.  They don't realise that the way this mod is structured, you are not going to get your pin like that.

Take the Explosive one. When they are going for that one they will run with their mines at people.  They get shot.  Those of us that actually PLAY however, we'd mine chokepoints, place a detpack where there are a large group of people waiting.  We don't go for the pins, but we get it because we use our equipment well.



I like the stats.  I hate the people who *attempt* to whore them.

DUKE815: Teamwork's complicated.  I've found that ramming a Lambda with a Y-wing at full boost is most effective.

stats are clothes.
Some people dont care much about them , and its reflected there.
but they can and will still own your a$$ all over the battlefeild and make you think paranoid thoughts of hackers and cheaters. 
then theres the wearers of nice clothes, like John.
It does no good to spill red 'whine' all over his white polo. Its just counter productive.
In my case, I have a baby blue gucci button-up shirt hidden under my dirty fatigues, but only the girls get to see that side of me.
As far as you other grunts out there , you get to see just a rough exterior no better than the common soldier.
