Topic: Advice on Server Map Rotation

I've seen a few people on IRC talk about devising an improved map rotation to help keep the numbers up, give the maps abit less of a stop-start feeling (the mix of space maps and inf, in the main) and add abit of visual and gameplay variety.

Here is my quick list I drew up of what I believe achieves this. Id hope that some servers will take the advice and put it into practice to help maintain as many players for as long as possible.

Ground - Bestine

Ground - Ryloth

Ground - Endor Strike Team

Ground - Rhen Var Research Facility

Ground - Mos Espa

Ground - Endor Clearing

Ground - Rhen Var Ice Plains

Ground - Mos Entha

Space - Battle of Taloraan

Space - Battle of Yavin

Space - Escape from Hoth

Space - Imperial Convoy Raid

1) Ground v Space

- For the sake of keeping the server full, seeing how space maps tend to empty the server sometimes, I think it'd be better to bunch them all together at the end, or start of the map rotation. For instance, those that prefer infantry over space can take a half hour break whilst the space maps play through and then come back.
Speaking from a pure infantry standpoint I believe that The Battle of Taloraan can be the best space map with alot of players and can be alot of fun even for inf lovers, hence why I would put it as the 1st space map. The fact that The Battle of Yavin allows infantry lovers to man turbolasers Id stick it as the 2nd map.  Id put Imperial Convoy Raid as the last map because it can be over relatively quickly therefore the Inf lovers have more of an incentive to join at this point knowing that the map may be over soon. Another reason why Id stick The Battle of Yavin and Escape from Hoth in the middle of the space maps is because both can drag on for quite a while.

2) Ground Variation

- People tend to tire of 4 games(2 maps) in a row set in the same type of location. An example of this would be Endor Strike Team and Endor Clearing.  They tend to tire from the same type of gameplay also. Hence why I would go with something along the lines of the above. Ryloth(combined arms) coming in between a city and a forest map(with light vehicles) and a snow map after that etc ,

Re: Advice on Server Map Rotation

I'm no server admin, obviously, but some things I feel should be taken into consideration, as discussed on IRC, are

1. Scenery (forest, desert city, etc.) should be varied, so don't put the two Rhen Var maps one after another, for example.

2. Order of Battle (infantry only, infantry and light vehicles, combined arms, etc.) should be varied, so don't put Ryloth right after Ice Plains or Research Facility after Mos Entha, for example.

3. I strongly believe it'd be a bad idea to put all the space maps together. What currently happens is that all the players who for some reason hate space maps enough to quit the server when they show up (don't ask, I have no idea why, truly) leave, and then rejoin when the space map is over. I also know that space maps with few players simply aren't very fun, so if Taloraan gets player counts down to 6-10 and those 6-10 are treated with another space map, there's a high chance even more will quit because they're not having fun. The result of this is that maps change even more slowly. If those 6-10 people are thrown back into a planetary map, however, numbers will quickly regrow. That's my theory, anyhow smile .

Some of this is covered in the post above, of course, but I wrote this quickly, so pardon me.

Re: Advice on Server Map Rotation

I am one of those people who hate space maps enough to quit the server. I don't hang about checking the status of the server every 5 minutes to see if it is changed (especially if I know that there is gonna be like 1 ground map and then back on another space map), Ill regularly be off the server for an hour or 2 hours, more or all night, if I get myself busy.

Id prefer to see the server highly populated for as long as possible. To do this you'd need to bunch the ground maps together, albeit in a varied way.

I bet you, if a server adopted this strategy itd become the no.1 used server - aslong as it ran ok.

Re: Advice on Server Map Rotation

If the tards who quit the space maps stay in, they would be over with very fast -
like today in the most awesome taloraan map we played , lots of people and it played out really well.
Didnt last long, and fleet coordination was king.

Re: Advice on Server Map Rotation

Space rocks IF people stay to fill it. Get ever ship flying, guns manned, then it becomes more about co-ordination and teamwork than any infantry map IMO. Those that leave space because it sucked in the past due to low numbers need to stick around and see how a busy server plays out, or at least give some feedback on what it is about space they dont like. I dont buy the flying thing since you can man a cap ships guns or a TL on Yavin. The only map that is purely fighter is Convoy raid.

Re: Advice on Server Map Rotation

I think there are a lot of bad ideas in this map rotation, first having all the space maps at the end together? How exactly is that going to help keep the server full? If you don't like spacemaps and then a load appear in a row then you are just going to leave for good and find another server. If you have a nice mix of spacemaps and ground maps it keeps everyone happy, people who don't like space maps will know that at least after this spacemap finishes there will be a ground map to follow, so they are more likely to stick it out. Same with people who like space maps, they know that after a ground map there is a good chance that the next map will be a space one. So with this in mind I have to say that I totally disagree with that idea.

Also I don't know about starting with Bestine, unless you're talking about the 16 player version. We've found that a better map to start your rotation on is Mos Entha, being a small infantry map it works well when you are just trying to get the server going with only a few players, then you can escalate things by either moving on to Mos Espa, or perhaps an Endor map, and then as the server fills you can be in a good position to start playing the larger combined arms maps like Rhen Var: Ice Plains and Ryloth.

Sorry, but that just blatantly doesn't happen.

The whole point of this is not to " help keep the server full?". It is to help keep the server full for as long as possible

And as for people who like space over ground, it must be about all of a massive 5% of the playerbase.

Starting with Mos Entha after the space maps is probably a better idea, agreed but having the same planets play out after each other is something to be avoided.
