Re: Advice on Server Map Rotation
Twigs wrote:Space rocks IF people stay to fill it. Get ever ship flying, guns manned, then it becomes more about co-ordination and teamwork than any infantry map IMO. Those that leave space because it sucked in the past due to low numbers need to stick around and see how a busy server plays out, or at least give some feedback on what it is about space they dont like. I dont buy the flying thing since you can man a cap ships guns or a TL on Yavin. The only map that is purely fighter is Convoy raid.

Yea, Battle of Taloraan is about co-ordination, and with enough people can be fun, but it is the other maps, especially Yavin and Hoth that kill servers stone dead. A few leave when Taloraan comes on, but if there are enough people on , then quite a few of us will stay on for it. I believe people dont like space maps because they are repetitive and quite shallow (of course there are those that just dont like to pilot or be stuck in a turret - yavin is very boring waiting around in a turret .... esp as there is only ever 1 turret in the action at any one time, you cant repair them and the map takes fricken ages to finish)

I'm sorry, but it does happen, heck I've even seen you on the RT server pop off when a space map comes on only to return later. Or stick it out for a space map knowing that there will be a ground map next, so don't tell me that that doesn't happen. Though it is true that a spacemap can kill a server sometimes, Yavin being the worst culprit, I think this is due to the poor performance some people get on this map coupled with the fact that a lot of Vista users have problems with it too. I still think mixing it up is the best way to maintain a server making sure every flavour that is available within First Strike is not far away, diversity is the key, and I agree that this should extend to the various types of ground map available as well as the mix between space and ground. As long as people know their favorite map or game type is not far away and that the next map will be a different experience to the one they're currently playing they'll stick around.

As I said, Ill stay if enough people are on Taloraan and sometimes for Convoy Raid, cos it can be over quite quickly but I never play the other space maps and never stick it out waiting for the ground maps to return. The only time I wont leave as soon as the loading screen for these maps comes on is to try and vote, but of course RT doesn't have vote enabled so you wont have seen me on those maps - atleast not for month's, since the novelty diminished. So, yea, it doesn't happen. Endor has its problems , sure, but space maps, the majority of times, kill the server, no matter which one it is. Yea, sounds good on paper and in intention, but in reality space maps empty servers and the ground map/s that come/s right after a space map suffers as a result. Intentions and paper are irrelevant to me, only the effects matter.

Re: Advice on Server Map Rotation
If you put four space maps in a row, they'll empty the server and Escape from Hoth and Convoy Raid simply won't be played. I think you know that quite well. If you insist on having four space maps in a row, you might as well just remove all but one of them altogether . I am one of those people who hate space maps enough to quit the server.
Which is tragic, but no reason to ruin them for the rest of us.

You're probably right.. people who don't like space maps are likely shallow and repetitive. Space maps certainly aren't. As has been said- if people are open enough to stay around for some space combat, the maps not only take less time to declare a winner but are more fun. Space only becomes a drag when everyone runs away from a situation where standard FPS tactics won't carry the day (camp, snipe, spam grenades/prox mines...) Funnily enough when I stay up late I find its usually the yanks who have the least issues with space- even brand new people are shouting movie quotes and enjoying themselves.

hehe, space maps and voip are great for that very reason There are maps I hate, maps I love, but I dont leave a server when a map i dont like comes along, why empty a populated server for no reason other than a map you dont like is on. Seems rather silly to me, when half those people that leave dont start another server (thereby helping kickstart other servers and keep the mod going), then the upcoming infantry map takes a while to repopulate again. I also notice that a lot of those people who claim to hate space are the ones that are first to start arguing over who got to a flying craft first when playing on Ryloth.......

Re: Advice on Server Map Rotation
All space maps in a row would definitely kill the server especially if they didn't have map voting enabled. If there were enough players to fill a couple of servers, one of them could be infantry only. For now there's no sense in changing the rotation like that.
