Re: Clone Wars TV Series

Yeah, definitely had the feel of a filler episode about it, but was still quite enjoyable. Assajj Ventress is always an interesting character to watch, and there were a few interesting nods to the OT. I didn't mind the Bounty Hunters working together as a gang, but I hear what you're saying about these characters being far more interesting as rivals than colleagues. Though who's to say that they don't have a falling out between now and when we next see them on the bridge of the Executor in TESB? To be honest they didn't exactly seem like the best of buds here, more like acquaintances that have clubbed together because the job required it of them.

Aye, the skyhook was a nice touch, surprised we haven't seen more of them since they were introduced in Shadows of the Empire so long ago now. They made them out to be quite a common occurrence on Coruscant, and with  that being treated as fairly high level canon it is a surprise to have only just seen our first one used in the Clone Wars now.

Regarding the Bounty Hunter gang, I'm not so convinced that a gang would rally behind Boba Fett at such a young age, sure he's done a thing or two by this point, but has he really done enough to gain the respect of his fellow Bounty Hunters enough for them to take him on as their leader at his tender age? Maybe there is a story there that needs to be told. I mean, yeah he was pretty handy and able to handle himself in this episode, but he still ended up tied up and bundled into a box by the end of it. I'm also not so sure about Dengar having a cockney accent, I suppose we've never heard him talk before, so there is no reason for him not to have that, but I'd always imagined him with a more gravelly rough around the edges voice, so that made me raise an eyebrow when I first heard it. The droid was a pretty cool addition, as was the chick with the weird blade scarf weapon thing, these made for interesting characters.

The Ninjas that attack the train were a little mental, in that like you say they did seem a little video game spawny in the way they just kept coming, but what I found more surprising was how much trouble Ventress had tackling them. Was she holding back, trying to limit her use of Force powers now that she has turned her back on the Dark Side or something? As she seemed nowhere near as formidable as we've seen her in the past vs. Jedi (and Sith Lords for that matter). Perhaps she was trying to keep a low profile by not showing herself to overtly have strength in the Force unless she absolutely has to (as she does in the final moments of this episode's action scenes). Either way all in all it was filler yes, but enjoyable enough filler.

Bring on the return of Darth Maul next week I say.

Re: Clone Wars TV Series

Well sorry but I guess they executed this story branch better than I expected. So Darth Maul is alive and a bit out of his mind, living as a hermit beneath a junk planet.

I really liked the planet itself, it was very interesting. I didnt fancy seeing Maul having a spider body but I guess it looked better than the non-canonical version of him we've seen in comics.

Re: Clone Wars TV Series

Flippy check out the trailer for next week, he loses the spider legs and looks identical to the comic.

I'll discuss the episode more when I get up tomorrow.

Re: Clone Wars TV Series

Good episode, piled on the atmosphere and intrigue. We see a foreboding in Force users across the galaxy as they feel the disturbance in the Force, something stirring, something sinister. This is played out nicely, though I'm surprised they didn't show Palpatine sensing something seeing how he has the greatest connection to Maul, perhaps we'll see more on that front in the next episode.

The junk planet was nicely put together, once again great atmosphere, had a feeling of something we hadn't seen before, though it did feel a little like the junk planet from the game The Force Unleashed, perhaps intentional with Witwer playing Maul. Lots of good and interesting touches here from the Fire Breathers, nightmarish giant walking mech trash furnaces, to the aggressive Jawa/Tusken Raider like Junkers, a trashed droid tribe who take a pop at Savage Opress as he explores the world. Finally you have a serpent like character who almost acts like Savage's spirit guide and helps him along, who sounds very much like he's voiced by James Hong. All in all it is a very plausible and well realised world brimming with atmosphere.

Then the character we've all been waiting for turns up under the surface and he doesn't disappoint. He's a few lightsabers short of a Jedi Temple however and is really gone, his lower half replaced by a cyborg spider-like body it is a bit of a crazy but striking figure (I'd rather see them do the devil like cyborg legs seen in the comic and action figure of the Darth Maul who returns from the dead. Still a striking figure, but more practical and still very menacing with that cloven hoof thing going on), and his mind is clearly very disturbed, this is why they got Sam Witwer in to do this, he has made a speciality of playing conflicted and just plain bonkers characters, be that Starkiller in The Force Unleashed or (Doomsday wasn't it?) in Smallville. Here he really brings the crazy to great effect.

If there was one minor gripe I'd have about this episode, it is that it's pretty much all set up for the next episode, as to be honest not very much actually happens other than Savage finally finding his long lost brother. That said, the episode is so atmospheric and does such a good job of setting things up for the next episode, especially with the final scene where Obi-Wan goes to visit Yoda and they both realise that Maul is back from the dead, that you can forgive it for that, and just get really pumped up for the finale.

It's going to be good.

Re: Clone Wars TV Series

Didn't like spastic Spider-Maul.
Truckasaurus was interesting.
I just got a bit tired of the phrase: "Is that you brother?"

Re: Clone Wars TV Series

I thought the resurrection of Maul was executed quite nicely in the series. It wasnt just "Honey, Im back!" style of thing you are used to see. The lightsaber fight was so damn well made, I really enjoyed watching it.

Re: Clone Wars TV Series

*SPOILERS!*

I'm going to go into depth about the finale here, so if you wish to remain unspoiled, turn away now.

So at last we come to the season 4 finale, and it certainly does not disappoint. After returning in the last episode slightly unhinged to say the least, in this one Darth Maul finally comes into his own once more. His brother Savage returns him to Dathomiir to have his marbles rearranged and restored by the Nightsister's leader Mother Talzin. This mesmerising sequence also has Maul's spider-like lower cybernetic body reconfigured into the devil like cloven hoofed biped version familiar to those who've seen the comic book and action figure rendition of Darth Maul returned from the dead, this looks much more practical and is far cooler.

Restored to the potent force for evil we all know and love Maul sets his sights on revenge, hence the title, and travels with his brother to Iridonia (A nod to Maul's original back-story I suspect. Wasn't his race the Zabrak supposed to have originated on Iridonia, but then got ret conned to Dathomiir? Explained away as Zabrak colonisation? [Actually, just checking on Star Wars.com and the world was Raydonia, not Iridonia they went to, I misheard. Still with the name sounding so similar I suspect my theory of that being a nod to that Zabrak background holds water]) to slaughter a few innocents and get the Jedi's attention (once again, very dark for a supposedly kids show). He then sends a transmission and executes some of these civilians right in front of the Jedi Council members watching. He demands that Kenobi comes to that world alone to face him, and the Jedi Council and Obi-Wan agrees. It is strange that the Jedi don't commit more resources to the capture of such a significant target, and this is mentioned in the story, but Yoda agrees that Kenobi should go alone, stating that through the Force he can sense that he won't be alone.

This all dovetails nicely into a scene with Assajj Ventress, now a fully fledged bounty hunter discovering that there is a bounty on Savage Opress's head (One slight niggle here, how does Ventress know to find them on Raydonia? I assume the bounty didn't come complete with a current location of the target). The pieces are all on the board and the play is set in motion to lead to a cracking smack down between multiple foes, Nightsister vs. mutated Nightbrother, Jedi vs. Sith.

So Obi-Wan arrives to face Maul, only to find it is a trap as he gets caught between the rock and a hard place that is Maul and Savage, but I'm surprised he gets taken down so quickly. He is a master Jedi after all, and has taken on worse odds even in the movies. Basically this was clearly done to save time for the larger conflict to come, after all we only have 20 odd minutes to play with here, and I can forgive them for that, as when Assajj arrives (secreting herself onto the freighter that the brothers have been using since Savage stole it at the junk planet) and attempts to rescue the fallen Jedi, the lightsaber battle that kicks off is nothing short of fantastic. The result is a stalemate, but Kenobi and Assajj are starting to lose ground, so they retreat to the cockpit which doubles as an escape pod, and in a gripping scene that owes a lot to the final scenes of Alien, they escape just in the nick of time.

So we have one of the best season finales of The Clone Wars yet, and my greatest fears with the return of Darth Maul remain unrealised. They did the character justice, and didn't bring him back again only to kill him off just as quickly as they did originally. They're learning from their mistakes there clearly. So with Maul and Savage still at large, and all the interesting plot possibilities that raises, season 5 can't come soon enough.
