Topic: Getting the Community Popular Again

Hi all!

I don't post hear often, but I wanted to address the issue of the lack of players on First Strike recently. Obviously you all know that the population has been decreasing recently, I honestly don't know why, but something needs to be done to get players back.

First Strike is a fantastic mod; everyone in the community does their part, be it developing, testing or even just playing the mod. I've never seen such detail on the maps, weapons, models and it shows, it really does.

So we need to ask ourselves the question: Why arn't people playing it? Could it perhaps be that we are not advertising enough? Dunno, players seem to come when a new version is released, then after a few weeks of playing, they stop, which sucks. We need new blood!

The obvious solution is Jetpacks- WAIT! I'm kidding, sorry Duke, time to change your underwear.

I think we need to step up advertising, we need to get this noticed! Hell even coming Fourth place in the ModDB awards hasn't gained us much popularity. Perhaps we could get a few guys to make some new banners and videos? I hear theres a Media Team now? I would love to join this, as I have a passion for Photoshop and especially Machinima. Unfortunately, I don't think I'd have the time to commit to this as college keeps me very busy, although I am learning After Effects, so perhaps I can help post-process a few videos.

Sorry, I'm going off on a tangent. Let's have a little Brainstorming session and try and come up with some methods to get more people playing.

Re: Getting the Community Popular Again

Hm, lack of players:
The best way to get more players is to ask your friends to play FS.
The community games are also a good way to give new players a possibility to play on a full server.
Promoting the community games is IMHO the best way to promote FS.

IMHO there are some things that keep the players away from FS:
- Problems with the Launcher
- Getting pwnd every round because of IMBA Teams on the server

It's sad that sometimes the gameplay during the community games is as worse as on a bad vanilla server.
Players don't go into squads, all regular players are in one team, pwning the over into oblivion.

IMHO some things can be done to make the gaming expirience better:

I remember the old Squadplay all the way server from the IPD Clan.
http://www.ipdclan.com/movies.html
It was on of the BF 2142 Vanilla servers with the best teamplay because ot the rules an the admins who enforce the rules:
Time before Roundstart was set to 2 Minutes, 30 secs to give the players time to organize into squads and vote for a commander.
Players who didn't join a squad were kicked from the server after the 3rd warning.
Such a warning is possible with a script (tactical gamer servers run this script):
http://www.tacticalgamer.com/wiki/index … dless_kick

Second many players don't have a clue what to do and what equiqment their class have.
Movies like the training movies for Forgotten Hope 2 may be helpfull.

Oh, and a own First Strike Channel on Youtube would be also helpfull wink

Re: Getting the Community Popular Again

Perhaps the DS server should have some rules similar to that server then? I was playing yesterday and half of my team weren't in a squad. That, and the fact that the BI chaps were on the other team, so it was RSF and some fairly unknown players versus most of the regulars. Needless to say, we got destroyed.

Well, RSF are hardly new to First Strike so could have always offered some advice and prompted people to squad up. Perhaps even create a squad each so you can be sure of experienced squad leaders running the unknowns.

Doing this prevents people getting peeved by not knowing what they are doing or the map objectives. Getting slaughtered in every round is hardly much fun and is the quickest way to put new players off and prevent them from returning.

Those experienced enough SHOULD know better, when we have problems getting even one server populated each night. If there is a huge team imbalance then something should be said and experienced players try to spread themselves out to balance it up.

In a community night especially, clan stacking should be discouraged in order to make the night as much fun as possible for everyone of all skill levels. Save the stacked sides for clan battles please!

Re: Getting the Community Popular Again

I'd be glad to install a script on DS server that kicks you after a minute or so for not squading up.  It's the general opinion that we want to give people more freedom than that, though.

I think it's my fault and I thought Omen was the head of PR.

Re: Getting the Community Popular Again

Lack of players is because of the crappy 2142 engine I think. People have enought to complain about on vanilla rather than adding what they perceive to be more strain, meaning a mod.
