I haven´t played online often and long enough to argue for a smaller transporter by experience but I like the idea, too.

I like the idea. The rebels do need to get some sort of air transport (Or have the ability to hi-jack a Lambda or Sentinel, that could work too). Though in both Force Unleashed (Not good on anything but the Wii btw) and SWBF2, they featured the LAAT and its counterpart, the MAAT (Multi altitude assault transport). the maat is that blockier one? Looks more rebel to me.
If we removed the ball guns and possibly the lower set of wings, it would look good.
The guns could be replaced with underslung weapons ala the sentinel/2142 air trans.

Won't be seeing any Prequel Trilogy assets in FS, just smacks of lazy all the Star Wars games that started featuring them even though they were set in the original trilogy timeframe.

Oh, and though the Rebel faction doesn't have the ability to capture or hijack a Lambda or Sentinel (just too powerful an asset to allow that I'm afraid), there are certain maps where the Rebel faction does come equipped with a procured Lambda.
