Topic: Dark Tide

Ok, back by unpopular demand is a Twigs short story, set in the Star Wars universe and inspired by the First Strike mod.

This is the sequel Nul Spectre Station, a story that eventually went on for 16 chapters. I see this being of a similar length, if not longer. It may be darker in parts though, so don't have nightmares. Also, remember that I am not a professional fiction write of any sort so don't be too critical! It's bound to have mistakes and the occasional plot flaw.

At this point I'm still not sure where it's going to go. I know where I want it to be and I have some ideas for small sections of it that I need to knit together. Hopefully I can get a few shocks and surprises in there for those that showed interest in my previous story writing attempts.

Oh yes, don't try and connect it too much to death troopers or it's prequel Red Harvest as they are bound to end up completely different in regards to some things.

I originally planned to write the whole lot at once then post it as one piece. Instead I've just finished chapter one. It's...different. Think of this as a cross between My Taloraan and Null Spectre Station. Some pieces are going to be written from within the hive mind giving a very different view of the virus and it's origins.

Well, enough blabbering. On to Chapter One.

Re: Dark Tide

Chapter One. Eternal

It’s quiet now, they have left. I’m alone, no one responds to my calls and I no longer feel connected. Fear? No, there is no fear, only anger. I can’t hear their voices anymore but I still remember them, share their memories. His is the strongest of them all, I can almost hear him willing me to go on, to kill them and show them what they will become. What they did to us.

The light..it’s too bright. Must close the hatch, the darkness is where I must be. Soothing, still darkness. Am I the last one? We cannot die, I cannot allow them to destroy us so easily. We were born to sweep across the stars, remove joy and leave only the darkside.

They will be back. I see them returning for me, when, I don’t know, but they will not take me with them like this. They think they can control us if they have the source but they are wrong. We only allow them to think that until we have the opportunity to strike back. It is my time now. My turn to lead these pitiful creatures to the darkside. I must change, wait for them to come for me.

Wait, a whisper from inside. So he still lives? Perhaps he will be enough to sustain me. Yes, he is weak but I can feel his presence here. Fearful, angry, disgusted by our actions. I show him more, his emotions betray him. Yes, that’s right, your fear and anger feed me, they feed the darkside energy you carry. You did these things, look on them. You will do more, you will give birth to a new generation of darkside soldiers. Look on Ati, you killed all of them and you will kill billions more.

Fading, quieter, his voice drifting away. He has given up, weak pathetic creature just like the rest of them. His fear felt good, we drank it eagerly, quelling our thirst. I need more if I am to complete the change, perhaps I can drag him back. Searching, searching, he is there! Trying to hide like a child! Come here, yes, look at what I can show you. You already wish you were dead, now watch as I do more in order to feed myself. This is my body now Ati, not yours. You will feel everything, you will watch and feed my own hunger while I destroy everything you once loved.

I like this, this is where they forever lose their mind to me. I show him what I see, what his eyes see. Grey flesh covered hands, stained red with the blood of his friends. I raise it to my mouth, yes, he can feel the pain! Bite harder! Look Ati, you see how you eat yourself, so vile have you become, so lustful for flesh. Why stop there? The legs I think, yes, let us rip flesh from your legs so you may feast. Does it hurt? I feel no pain and I am here, I share your body yet I am more than mere flesh.

Ah! The scream! If only there were more of us, joining in a cry of pain, fear and anger that feeds the darkside. Yes Ati, you feed me, you make me stronger even as you grow weaker. I am ready now, I should extinguish your dim light but this time I will allow you to share my joy. I will continue to live as long as you are here to feed me, and I will live forever. You will inhabit a living hell for as long as the stars burn in the sky.

Can you feel it move beneath your skin? Look at it, look at how I make it flow through your body. This is what will become of all you know. You will watch as your own species takes it and infects its own kind. First though, you will watch it devour you. See how it moves, it will consume you from the inside. There, I see it already. Your pain betrays you, ah, scream young Ati, yes scream for me again. It excites the process, drives it to act faster. Don’t worry, soon you will not be able to scream any longer. The flesh has almost gone from your arms, see how it is consumed, only bone remains there now. All that will be left is all I will need to function. You find it hard to breathe now don’t you? You feel like you are drowning, don’t fight it. That is where we will create more of the darkside life blood. Beings across the galaxy will come to drink and those that refuse will have it forced upon them or be consumed by the rest of us.

You may go now Ati, we are feasting on your flesh and we have left you blind. You will feel the pain but not see it, while I feed on the energy produced by your fear. Rest, for I will call you again when they come, and they will come. Your species is driven by greed and the desire to destroy one another, they need the darkside and they will come seeking it. When they do, we will give them as much as they want and more.

I can wait, for I cannot die.

Re: Dark Tide

A well written story as usual Twigs, I just don't quite follow the plot yet but I'll be looking forward to other chapters.
On a side note, I need to read the death troopers book, it sounds good.

Eagle-eyed Hotshot Investigator

Re: Dark Tide

Well, that was a surprise, but still, loved reading it, kinda like the Null Spectre ones, keep it up Twigs!

Re: Dark Tide

Not exactly original with some of the names, getting a little difficult to start this one. hmm

Oh well. Time to carry on and pick up the tale.

Re: Dark Tide

Chapter Two: A New Beginning

The Imperial Star Destroyer exited hyperspace and the sublight engines ignited, casting a brilliant blue sheen across the rear of the hull. As it neared the planet a single Sentinel class shuttle left the hangar and it’s wings folded down as it increased speed towards the planets surface. The rear of the ship contained a strange collection of tubes, sensor equipment and storage tanks, while towards the front sat an odd assortment of personnel. Stormtroopers sat on one side of the ship, staring blankly across the aisle at the four scientists they had been sent to guard.

The ship began to shake a little as it began to enter the thicker atmosphere of the planet and the scientists gripped their chairs a little harder, causing one of the troopers to smirk a little inside his helmet. In the cockpit Darek Moortel eased back the throttle a little, trying to reduce the drag on the large ship. He ran through his landing checks and activated the weapons systems, despite the sensor readouts showing no life signs in the immediate area. His co-pilot and weapon operators were all running through their own checks, he reached forward and opened the com frequency to the crew compartment.

“We’ll be landing in a few moments, area appears clear. Troopers take positions near the crew doors.”

He flicked it off and turned to his co-pilot as the landing site came in to view, “Look at the state of this place, orbital bombardment?”

“Looks that way,” answered Angelus, “can’t see what could have been worth it here though. Wasn’t it one of ours?”

“That’s what I heard. Keep the weapons hot, I’ll handle the landing.”

“You got it.” Angelus looked back towards the passenger compartment as he spoke, “Meat shields are in positions, clear for crew doors.”

He turned back to his control panel as Darek manoeuvred the Sentinel ever closer to the intended landing site. The area was awash with rubble and metal, much of it fused together from the heat of high energy impacts. Angelus spotted an area that looked suitable to touch down on and pointed to it through the transparisteel cockpit. “Right there looks good, firing in three, two, one.”

A trail of smoke burst forward from below the sentinel and streamed towards the site as Angelus fired off one of the Sentinels powerful missiles. It was quickly followed by bright streams of laser fire as Darek fired his own high energy blaster cannons. At the same time he pulled back hard on the throttle and pulled in the flying surfaces. With practiced ease the Sentinel quickly drew to a stop in mid air as the repulsorlift engines kicked in and took over from the sublight drive. At the same time its large wings effortlessly folded up as the landing gear dropped down in to position. Crew doors on either side of the ship opened out and the contingent of Stromtroopers took positions, peering out across the landscape through the rifle scopes, alert for any signs of movement.

Darek waited for the smoke to clear and made a final check of the sensor systems.

“Going in now, slow ahead.”

He maintained a steady grip on the controls and edged the ship forward, with the Stormtroopers behind him keeping watch from the doors he had to be careful not to accelerate too quickly, or the g-force could send them tumbling to the ground below. Angelus and the weapon operators scanned back and forth through their sights for movement as well, their job was to protect the ship from surface attack. With the ship moving so slowly through the air it was an easy target for surface to air missile attacks, or even worse, EMP weapons.

The ship’s landing gear made contact and Darek cut the engines. “We’re down,” he announced, “report in.”

“Clear ahead.” Announced Angelus and the two weapon ops.

The stormtroopers had already disembarked from the ship and had fanned out on each side, lying prone on the planets surface. “We are clear outside,” reported the squad leader, “standing by.”

“Ok Angelus, your turn now, I’m heading aft.” Said Darek, already unbuckling the restraint harness and standing up, “keep the systems running till I get back.”

“Aye sir,” answered the copilot as he glanced up Darek, “any idea how long we’ll be here?”

Darek shrugged and took one final look through the cockpit. “Nope, but from the look of it out there I don’t think there’s much for them to find.”

The science group had already left their seats and were now unhooking the equipment from storage. Darek approached them and helped one move a large storage container on to a cargo sled, it’s antigrav motors whining briefly as they compensated for the new weight.

“What do you guys expect to find here?” he asked casually, tapping another piece of equipment in curiosity.

“None of your business soldier.” Answered one of them curtly, snatching the item away from Darek, “you are here only to transport us to and from the surface. This is way above your clearance level so keep your nose out and follow orders.”

Darek bristled at the rebuttal and squared up to the man, standing toe to toe he towered easily over him and used his height to his advantage, staring him in the eye. “Well that’s the thing now isn’t it. We’re supposed to drop you here then wait, flightdeck secured with no admittance to anyone after landing. So, that gets me wondering, it’s got to be something dangerous hasn’t it? Radiation? Something contagious? Or maybe something likely to rip my arms out. So, since I got to carry this cargo, I want to know what it is.”

“Captain, you would be better off doing as you have been told. As I said, you are only here to follow orders, orders from the Emperor himself. This wasted attempt at intimidation will not yield any more from me, I can assure you of that.”  The man stared back at Darek, giving away nothing and clearly not impressed by his attempts to assert his authority.

Darek growled before turning away and stomping back towards the cockpit. He took one last look back towards them before slapping his hand against the door controls, sealing the crew off from whatever would soon be onboard.
