Topic: Rememberance Day

The 11th of November marks Rememberance Day, also known as Armistice Day, Poppy Day or Veterans Day. It is the commemoration of the end of hostilities in 1918, the end of World War 1, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. It has also become a date where many nations remember all those who have fallen in the defence of their country in all major conflicts.

Although I am not familiar with other countries customs for this date, here in the UK we honour a minutes silence at 11am, to pay respects and honour the fallen. I would ask all of you to take the time to spare a minute on this day and pay your respects to the men and women of your own nation that have given the ultimate sacrifice for your freedoms.

To the fallen, a poem entitled "In Flanders Fields" by Canadian Military Doctor Major John McCrae.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
