Topic: Legal/Copyright laws

Hey

Im a student game designer, Pretty novice but im slowly gaining the experiance and knowledge of game development.

One thing im curious of is how the Legal/Copyright laws work when groups make a game/mod based of a idea which was created by a majour company (Lucas).

Did you have to gain Permission to make this mod? or is there certain loop holes in the Terms&conditions so you can only use certain things. Since ive noticed the music doesnt sound the same as the music in the films so im guessing they may be copyright protected?

Any Way just curious over what happens with copyright laws when stuff like this is produced?

There was a recent thread about this:

It just applies to Star Wars, so if your also asking about all games...  *Shrugs*

Re: Legal/Copyright laws

Best advice: use your own ideas for making a game.  Star Wars has got to be the single worst universe to make a game in (trust me, this is my second time doing this so I speak from experience).  We can't sell our product, we have trouble even advertising our product, and if Lucas wanted to he could easily just shut down the operation tomorrow.

The only legal proceeding that took place was we were required to turn over all copyright, once finished, to LucasArts.  The agreement stems from some of our previous works and also an open "Fan Fiction" creation agreement put out by LucasArts themselves via LucasFiles.com.  This means that this mod is effectively LA property (though they claim no warranty nor liability for these works) and should they pick up the copyright they could even reproduce our works without paying us one red cent.  We also had to agree not to use any specific trademark terms (like "lightsaber" or "han solo") nor could we use any characters from the movies

So as I said, use your own ideas.  Not only are you legally protected from theft, but you can do so much more with them.  In this pokey universe we're forced to make blasters a certain way. We have to make the aircraft fly in a particular fashion.  We aren't allowed to add lots of new things nor can we change any of the existing stuff because then it wouldn't be star-wars.  And because we're so restricted and locked in development has been both difficulty and saddening at times.
