The BF 2 & BF 2142 Games are mainly online multiplayer.
Singleplayer exists, it's played on the same maps as in multiplayer with bots. Most BF players prefer Online Multiplayer and use Singleplayer only to train or to play COOP on lan-parties.
While the bot's are lacking the tactical skill of a human counterpart, you can still communicat very good with them, using a mousedriven radial menu:
You can give em orders, call for ammunition or a medic, ask the to pick you up with a car...
Communication works the same way as with human players, maps & gameplay are the same, so singleplayer is a good newbee-training for multiplayer.
The BF2 & BF 2142 main feature are big battles with 64 players on large landscapes, mixing indoor areas (buildings to enter) with large outdoor areas (woods, desert...), infantery combat with tanks and airvehicles.
As tools for coordinatet battles a player can join a squad of six players, the leader of the squad (also a player) can set orders like waypoints.
Some elements of the game world can be destroyed (like bridges) but only on a limited base. It's impossible to burn the whole map to the ground
It's also impossible to enter every building, and vehicles like tanks can' run over trees, but it's still a great game if played in a good team.
the http://www.ipdclan.com/movies.html has some good videos with examples of teamplay in BF 2142
Main gamemode is Conquest: Both sides fight about control points (marked with Flagpoles and Flag of the Side who controls the point).
If a side controls all CPs killed enemys can not longer spawn.
Every time a killed player respawns his side looses one ticket.
A match ends if one side has lost all of her tickets or all players are death and could not spawn.
