Prone works as well, but if you try and run and gun you will fail.

Proning isn't as effective by far as crouching, aiming-wise.

Odd...prone is the most stable firing position in reality, followed by crouching. The crouching or kneeling position can be made slightly more stable by resting against a solid object, but for accuracy use prone.
