I have the exact same problem and I have been trying to solve it for hours with no success.
I am running on Mac OS X 10.4.11, and bf2142 1.4

bf2142 has always worked great on my computer

Have you tried to run BF2142, go to community, and activate the FirstStrike mod? Thats one way to get it going. I dont know enough about macs to tell you how to make an FS shrotcut. But for an example, in Windows, I'd create a shortcut of the Battlefield 2142 shorcut icon by right clicking on it.

In windows the path would be(under properties...right click menu): "C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\Battlefield 2142\BF2142Launcher.exe"

and we would add:   +modPath mods/FirstStrike +menu 1 +fullscreen 1

which would give: "C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\Battlefield 2142\BF2142Launcher.exe" +modPath mods/FirstStrike +menu 1 +fullscreen 1

So if you can see anywhere to adjust the path of the executable similar to this, and add that bit to the end, you can create a shortcut that loads the mod from that icon automatically.
