Topic: Yavin: Performance with Pentium 4 Northwood and AGP 1950 ?

During Space Combat i have sometimes realy low FPS, down to 14 FpS.
Even with everything set to minimum and 800 x 600 resolution.

My System is a P4 Northwood, running on 3 Ghz, 2 GB RAM an a ATI 1950 GT 512 MB, OS is XP 32 Bit Servicepack 2, DX 9.0c, ATI Drivers 08.3.

Settings:
VideoSettings.setTerrainQuality 1
VideoSettings.setGeometryQuality 1
VideoSettings.setLightingQuality 1
VideoSettings.setDynamicLightingQuality 0
VideoSettings.setDynamicShadowsQuality 0
VideoSettings.setEffectsQuality 1
VideoSettings.setTextureQuality 1
VideoSettings.setTextureFilteringQuality 1
VideoSettings.setResolution 800x600@60Hz
VideoSettings.setAntialiasing Off
VideoSettings.setViewDistanceScale 1
VideoSettings.setUseBloom 0
VideoSettings.setVideoOptionScheme 3

Most affected are Yavin and Escape from Hoth. FpS drop seems connected to other fighters firing shoots.

First i thougt it's my "old" CPU, but i run a log during playing:  14 FPS = 50% CPU Useage, 30 Fps 60% CPU Useage, nothing gets hotter than 55°C.

P4 and ATI 1950 are not so uncommon hardware...
so if other users have the same configuration i ask them to post their FpS during Yavin.

On the other side:
A friend of mine who was playing on the same server has had constantly 40 - 50 FpS.
Intel QuadCore, 8800 GT 320 MB. So it's seems not to be the server.

Its not the server, its more likely a bottleneck caused by your CPU and AGP.  Just because its a 3Ghz P4 dont mean its fast. A 1.6 C2D will kick its pie in most benchmarks.

Me, I'm horribly laggy on Ryloth ( It was the map that I loved the most. Because of the lag, I hate it now. Oh, and, talking about Ryloth, the 32 version of Ryloth is squeezey pooh. You should make a 32 version with starfighters. ) Laggy on Yavin ( I can't fight in it ) and in other maps, the lag isn't too big. Enditall can help you ( it close all the programs, so you have less lag. Be carefull, this program have two options : close all and erase all. If you click on erase all, you're quite doomed. )

32 Ryloth is being changed to be more like 64 player wink

Whats clear, and the next PC gets a new CPU and a PCI-E CArd... wink

But i am wondering why it's only affects Space Battles.
Ground Combat - except Ryloth- with more objects to render runs much better...
Also BF2142, BF2 and all Mods i can run with 1280 x 1024 and max settings.

AGP Speed is set to 8x... should not be much slower than PCI-E (2 GB/sec vs 4 GB/sec), but maybe the aperature size ?

I used EndItAll until i upgrade to 2 GB. Maybe i give i now an other try wink

Re: Yavin: Performance with Pentium 4 Northwood and AGP 1950 ?

I had that problem, too.
AMD 64 3200+
Ati 1650 Pro PCIe
I solved it by doing down die lightning settings. But mine are higher than yours ...

I also have a question:
What is this file for? C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\Battlefield 2142\mods\FirstStrike\settings\profiles\custom\video.con

At first I thought, it would save the graphics settings for FS, but it shows a Resolution of 800*600, but I have 1024*768

This is the content of the file:
rem *** Generated ***

game.setGameDisplayMode 800 600 32 0
game.setDetailTexture 4
game.setShadows 1
game.setEnvironmentMapping 1
game.setGraphicsQuality 3
game.setLightmaps 1
game.setRenderWhenSpawnMenu 1
game.setMenuViewdistance 100
game.setEffectsQuality 3
game.setPerformance 3

I think my CPU is to slow sad (no wonder, 4 Years old PC).
It's clear what lot of blaster bolts cause the lag in my case, without shooting = no lag.

Reducing Lithning to low and even off was no solution. sad

At the moment i'm thinking about building a new PC.
Using the 1950 GT with a new mainboard and an AMD X2 6000 is one option, DualCore Intel + new PCI-E Card the other, more expensive option.

Looks like default settings, used then no user settings are found.

BF 2142 has 4:
Custom, low, medium and high.
