Re: Forcing Squads

I've no real problem with lone wolfs if they play as part of a squad/team. Ie, going sniper but relaying information to everyone else. This works to their benefit as they can get toys unlocked (such as scanners to catch anyone sneaking up) and have their squad relaying tactical information so they can move and lay down cover fire. They can also spot for the mortar if its available on a map.

With the commander available now to co-ordinate things a little, make a sniper squad where you can all run round but be directed as well, or a medic lonewolf squad, you guys can just run behind everyone else getting your revive points up but get all items in the kit available to you.

Making squads doesnt neccessarily mean you have to have everyone with a different kit all attacking at once. Be creative, look at what needs doing. If your playing as commander then ask lone wolfs to make some kit specific squads so you can direct them to areas they are needed etc.

In space maps make a bomber and fighter squad, group together and try to provide specific cover. Oh, and bombers, your ships aren't designed for dogfighting! Rather than waste a payload of bombs by being caught in a dogfight with an X-Wing, let the fighters deal with it, do some weaving and at least TRY to get some torpedos off. Nothing more frustrating than a TB crashing in to me because he's too damn slow in the turns and doesn't know what his ship is for.

Re: Forcing Squads

I know some servers in Vanilla that kick after a few seconds if you do not Squad up.  I usually forget and do not notice the messages and get kicked, get annoyed and don't go back.

A message, even an audible message would be great, but plz no kicking. (If a server admin wants to do that on his server, more power to him)

Re: Forcing Squads

The problem with BF2 and 2142's, and as a consequence FS', squad system, is that it's so incredibly simplistic. It could be so much more user-friendly, advanced and teamwork-pushing. For example, instead of only having a short name, it'd be awesome if you could give your squad a longer name as well as a short description. Instead of being able to only give orders to the entire squad, it'd be great if you could give orders to individual soldiers, perhaps even by dragging boxes around their icons on the minimap to select them. Instead of having to explain everything verbally, I want to be able to scribble on the map. I want to place more elaborate orders on the map than just "Move", "Attack" and "Defend". And so on - I could list half a dozen more. The hierarchy system with the Squads and Commander is ingenious and has done so much for teamwork, but it could be so much more.

2.    Even though we had squads hardly any of them stuck together and worked together

Voice overs on the Squadleaders CommoRose to tell them "Gather around me" "Follow your Orders" or to Recomend / Rebuke them would IMHO improve the teamwork.

3.    The opposite team had far more devs and testers who were working together and who knew the ins and outs of the mod

I didn't see any way for the testers or devs to fix this problem wink

I have the same opinion about the squad system. IMHO it's one of the best features of BF2 / BF 2142, and improving it would make the whole game much better.

For example, instead of only having a short name, it'd be awesome if you could give your squad a longer name as well as a short description.

Short is relative, a good Squadname like Interceptors / Bombers / CapShips / AntiTankInf / Tankdrivers / Snipers / InfAssault is a good description.

It's sad thats no way to get a list of custom squadnames to select after opening a squad.

Instead of being able to only give orders to the entire squad, it'd be great if you could give orders to individual soldiers, perhaps even by dragging boxes around their icons on the minimap to select them.

The Commander can select a Squad by pressing T and using the Mouse wheel.
Eventually the Squadleaders CommoRose could modified to get the same at squadlevel ?

So you could select a sniper an tell them "got to this position" by placing a waypoint.

Instead of having to explain everything verbally, I want to be able to scribble on the map. I want to place more elaborate orders on the map than just "Move", "Attack" and "Defend". And so on.

Verbally works fine for me, thanks to the VOIP. But many players don't use the VOIP system. sad

Re: Forcing Squads

Now I can see some of you might say, "I don't want to join a squad, I dont like to follow orders", or "I dont like the pressure of being a squad leader". Thats fine smile You don't have to follow orders just because you are in a squad, you dont have to lead just because you are a squad leader. The point is, I see nothing but benefits when being in, or assuming the role of leader, in a squad. Most times it can actually lead to unintentional teamwork smile And its always more fun. No matter what kind of player you are.

Exactly. Just join a squad and keep doing your thing. Suddenly you have access to all the weapons and devices of your class. Great. Then you die and realize that you can spawn on your squad leader, who's at the front, instead of having to start over at the closest CP and drive to the action. You proceed to spawn at the SL, and find yourself in the middle of a firefight, fighting with the squad and giving bacta because it gets you points. You get ammo from your teammate, thus giving him points.

Unintentional teamwork.

IF you join a squad, you get

-the use of many tools in each class
-an extra spawn point (usually at the front lines)

Two extra spawn points. There's the spawn beacon too smile .

I did all that, again it all goes down to the individuals willingness to cooperate. Some people only join squads for the unlocks. IMO the bottomline is that there are alot of new players out there and it will take time for them to realize the gamemode which is more reason to communicate to them, and don't do things like switch teams cause ur losing smile That only upsets the balance even more. The more people play FS the more they will realize that its team based and will either accept it and work together or just leave because they wont be able to survive on their own. Either way we cater to a select group of players and its part of the reason why our numbers are so low IMO.

Re: Forcing Squads

i still think it would be wrong to force ppl into squads, and giving them extra score for being in a squad is not necessary either, because if you are working together well, then the players will end up on top of the scoreboard in 90% of the cases
i see it myself very often, even yesterday some very nice rounds i ended up as 1. just because i played officer and had a good squad around me!!
