You have no idea how fanatical some people get about those "minuscule" details!
I didn't used to think there was a difference until I started collecting them, but I've become a bit of an expert just by reading all the sites dedicated to collecting and making SW blasters and lightsabers (do you know how many versions of Luke's first lightsaber there is?!). Check out www.partsofsw.com for starters, which is an old site that's not been updated for many years (it doesn't contain Eps 2 & 3), but it's got lots of info specifically about which plastic bits were added to which WWII weapons (thanks MrMonkey ). And I'm certain there's lots of people playing this mod that know more of the differences than I do, but once you know them you'll spot them every time.
Here's a quick spot the difference with my two E-11s. The top one is the ANH/ESB version (as used in FS, but without the Hengstler Counter), and the bottom is the ROTJ version (which GC went with):
You can clearly see several differences, and virtually all the main weapons in SW have more than one version. There's at least three DL-44s (Han's blaster), there's two DH-17s which are VERY different, there's two DDC Defenders (Leia's blaster), and two EE-3s (Boba Fett's).
I'm glad you've not closed the door on new weapons, but I'd love to see some of the variations too, and I'm glad Talon already had the idea of giving the ESB DL-44 to the Rebel Officer, and I like his justification of the Imp Officer using the DL-44; I'm sold.
Now that's a guy that knows his blasters.
