Topic: The FS Pilots' Lounge

General space/air combat discussion

I have to say, there is nothing more satisfying than zooming around in an A-Wing, slotting in behind two TIE/Is trailing an ally, and popping them like toy balloons.

I find that when lining up targets, I actually like to make small heading adjustments using the rudder keys.  It depends on the target as well.

The best thing, though, is scoring a few hits, and as the enemy starts to veer off, rolling your craft in a corkscrew motion so that your lasers cover a larger circle and still kill your target.  Feels like you're pounding home the punishment.

Fellow fighter jocks feel free to shoot the breeze.

Re: The FS Pilots' Lounge

Sneaking up on people from behind is the most awesome thing in the whole mod when you do it to others, and so infinitely embarrassing when others do it in return.

HAHA! Well...I'm going for a few months so I'm giving away some of my secrets  tongue Standard of flying in the whole mod is definitely getting better though.

My favourite moment was hanging to the side of a cruiser and holding the trigger. Lasers were pounding the hull and the pilot was doing everything he could to shake me off. My favourite ever text was the pilots "Get the F****** X-Wing off my hull!" just before he went boom.

I'm actually waiting for people to reply with "I shot Twigs once. It felt great." I know Woody is bound to add that tongue

I fly with a stick making small changes extremely easy to do for me, compared to keyboard and mouse.
Getting in behind the enemy is good, but dont get too close or you show on their hud.
Y-Wings can take a bit of a pounding, stay low to the deck and make sure the gunner seat is occupied. You can then easily bring down any following Ties. Pilots should refrain from moving about and throwing off the gunners aim.
Don't go head to head unless your REAL confident. My stick lets me keep my shots in a steady stream, but those using a mouse may find it strays wild.
NEVER fly straight in enemy territory, move it around to both hunt the next victim and throw off pursuers.
A single X-Wing with a good pilot can take down a cruiser on it's own. Come alongside the cruiser and brake damn hard. You can almost stick to the cruiser just a few feet off the deck where gunners cant reach you. Plough laser shots into the hull and wait for it to go boom. You will be a prime target for stray Ties though, so have a wingman patrol.
Firing a spray of torpedos when going head to head can be enough to break up a pack of Tie Fighters, pick out a single fighter or head straight for the bombers.
Anything with a rear gunner is dangerous. Stay underneath out of his sights or come in from the sides.
NEVER shoot at a target unless its standing still. Aim at least one to two ship lengths in front to score a hit. Or if like me your shooting from distance, aim around a transport length in front. Yep, fighter sniping is fun tongue
Use rudder when turning to help keep a target in your sights. Ships with boost can also turn faster when using it.
Bombers should focus on bombing the big stuff. Let the fighters take care of the little stuff unless your on your own. When a fighter turns up, run towards him and hope he picks up your pursuer.
Some maps allow you to repair, dont neglect this! It will also rearm you if you've used torps.

Other things you can pick up yourselves smile

Gents, This is my stick: Logitech Wingman Interceptor.
http://vcauto.com/temp/mars/joy/joy_files/intercep.jpg

I bought a USB 'logitech attack 3' a year or 2 ago to replace it, because my PC I just built hadn't got a port for it. It's not a terrible stick unless you like to use your throttle...

So i bought a soundcard just to use my Wingman which i've been using since before XWA came out.

As you can see,, its got 3 buttons under the thumb which are 'Hat' switches-  they work in 2 axes, giving 4 button functions in each one.

The one under my thumb switches to rear view when i move it in 'Y' axis and back to cockpit when I use X axis. If and when you sneak up behind me- you get an extra internet cookie smile

Throttle works well when I have to throw a ship into reverse or kill speed to rearm.

My current favorite trick is an Old XWA trick with missiles. When going head to head, you fire 2 missiles at your opponent and break UP, then snap your nose back to face him.

He now has two options- try avoid your missiles or try fight you- the missiles are now approaching at a different angle. In XWA he could try shoot the missile and then shoot you- he doesn't have that luxury here.

If he goes for the missiles- laser him- he's toast. If he goes for you, laser him while spinning- the missiles will frag him.

Nice posts,  Twigs!

I love, as an Imperial, going after Y-Wings.  it's a big challenge.  You can tell pretty quickly if they have a tail gunner since he's usually dumb and fires and gives himself away long before you pull in behind the Y-Wing.

I try to come in from below the Y-Wing since I can't be shot from the tail gun that way.

You also are a prime target for hungry X-wing pilots, who, I know from being one time-to-time, will follow their slower Y-Wing comrades in order to pick up easy TIE targets.
