Topic: Hey there

Hey, long time fan, first time poster.... wink

So, I know a lot of people seem to be super into the First Strike Planetary League - but has anyone considered making a league that was less roleplay and organized?  Or even, solely space-based?

I remember a long time ago on the MSN Gaming Zone for X-Wing Alliance there was this sort of league known as Squad Wars.  As I recall, it was essentially a ladder based league - where you fought who you wanted when you wanted and it went by team win/loss ratio.  I think there were tournaments every now and then, but I can't be entirely sure.

Anyway, there were different tiers in the Squad Wars of the MSN Gaming zone for XWA.  I can't remember each and all in any detail, but I think it'd be pretty worthwhile to attempt this here, with the First Strike mod - and this mod even has something a little extra - objectives.

In a nut shell, it could be just like CAL or TWL - the leagues for numerous online games.  You could have different divisions within the league - 2v2 games, 4v4 games, 6v6 games, 8v8 games, etc.  But again, it'd be based entirely using First Strikes space combat and flight simulator (which is amazing, I might add).  It wouldn't be that difficult to arrange, and in fact, I'd be willing to take on a development role if enough people/clans/groups were interested.  Whether it be hosted and officially "sanctioned" by First Strike, is entirely up to the devs, but I'd like to do this no matter what, really.  I already have a squadron ready to compete, we just need people to compete with.

Any and all individuals interested, I encourage you to reply here and get this league rolling out.  It'd be quite an experience, and loads of fun.

Re: Hey there

I find this information intriguing and wish to subscribe to your newsletter.
I used to play XWA 2v2 etc back in the day.
I'm interested in dragging RSF into the FSPL, some ladder fun wouldn't go amiss either. Just like the good old days (except vastly better graphics, ping and connectivity!)

I'm trying to arrange some casual scrimming on the 12th and you say you have a squad ready to fly?

Re: Hey there

Well , 1st of all you dont know how FSPL works.
With this in mind, I will explain in the simplest terms, since rules for cycle 2 are barely ready.
It not space based. Only the map is since space contains everything in the universe , right?
The fleet movements are done in space because they wouldnt work very well on a planets surface.
Now, when fleet objects on the board encounter one another, a fight is set-up if the parties decide they hate each other enough to shoot at each other...
If this is out in space , well , the battle is fought ... out in space.
THe winner claims the hex ( about half a light-year across) and has his or her way about the matter.

If the encounter is on one of the planets ( with 1.2 we have a handfull now ) the battle is scheduled to be fought on the corresponding planet. The winner get his or her way about the dispute, of course.

One kicker that the video arcade players wont like, (too bad) is this is not just any league, its not designed to emulate anything else, its not going to be TWL , or CAL or involve any of the clusterfuks people go through to compete in those style leagues.

This league is to use the great FS mod on a higher plain. Im a simulation nut , so its no respawn.
You die, you are gone, dead. you will do squat for the rest of the battle. You see, these kind of fights really separate the morons from the smart people. "Strata" you might call it. Squad tactics and unit level leadership is paramount in this, and is promoted. If your squad on a ground map just run out there with no planning or practice, you will get hammered hard by the team who sticks to their plan of operation.

The bulk of the fighting ( proven in cycle one ) happened on ground maps.
Although with the death star active in the next round, the rebels will have to win Yavin to get that thing off the starmap, or else the imps will surely drive it to your doorstep. It travels 1 hex per impulse, so its solw , but has very long firing arc.

I was trying to keep this short and say that its purpose is to stage FS battles for a bigger purpose, that being the star map and roleplay aspect of it.
If thats not what you want , you dont have to bother yourself with us.
The players with adult skills and serious demeanor, with a strong desire to get the most of our FS fetish will enjoy this greatly.

Thats really what I wanted to say ...  tongue

Re: Hey there

Oh,  and Hoth is screwing with my head too . ( no offense guys ) With that monster comming in no-time , I almost want to have it in the mix already at the start of cycle-2 , but we wont be able to use it till the map actually is out. More thought on that later.

Re: Hey there

I don't think you understood where I was coming from - and you certainly don't have to be such a jerk about it all.  If you and the team don't want to support an endevour like this - you certainly don't have to, but to insult me and any else out there that might find this entertaining and worthwhile, only demonstrates your own ignorance and arrogance.  Excuse my tone - but if you don't like that, you shouldn't have dished what you did.

Further, I don't at all want to push my way into your existing league, this was about starting a separate league that would emulate CAL or TWL only design.  I'm all about tactics and strategy, but you don't have to simulate a galactic war to get either.  I'm looking at a smaller scale that doesn't require people to play day in and day out.  It'd be for more casual gamers that want to go have some space combat fun in a competitive environment.

If you don't like that, then you don't have to compete or participate - but its pathetic that you have to insult anyone who doesn't agree with how to play a game.  If you're apart of the mod team, that's also a shame because you're hardly the type of person or "manager" that will reel people on with your charm and personality.  This goes for anyone else out there that doesn't like this idea - move on and don't reply.  This was intended for people interested, not people who wanted to boost their ego by ripping on others.

Re: Hey there

Whoa guys.

I think theres room for a roleplay story based  league and a competitive ladder league.
They aren't mutually exclusive.
I enjoy the roleplay aspects of any starwars game and there's nothing wrong with playing for victories sake either.

Both leagues will promote the mod, which is what we are trying to achieve here.
