I guess it really depends on what you're looking for. If it's just surf sand and sun then Cali is the best american destination. If you're looking for more old-person type stuff then you have a wider range of options like Idaho, Oregon, or many of the places back east. Indeed, the east coast is great if you have lots of money and like to golf, sail, make fun of "new money" people, etc... For winter travel I can heavily recommend Utah as the state is cheap, the people are friendly (if a bit odd), and the snow is some of the best in the world. Colorado is also very very good. You don't want to go to Flagstaff though. Poor snow, overpriced everything, unattractive town. For history you mainly have to stay on the east coast, unless you're only interested in mining history. But I haven't met too many people outside of myself who enjoy pointless intellectual curiosities...:S
