Topic: Graphics problem red stuff everwhere....

I don't know how this stuff happens, I think it could be related to heat and my mom not getting the AC fixed in our house for over a year now.

Whenever I turn on my computer [at home] the screen is covered in red lines, flickering etc. I don't know what caused it initially because it happened the very first time I turned it on when I got home, and my mom says she knows nothing of it. They cover the entire screen and they appear the moment the windows XP start up screen starts. Nothing I do makes them go away and it seems the temp inside isn't that bad, I have even cooled it down so I think this is some sort of permanent damage from he heat while I was away? I hope not, but I need some insight into the problem before I go pay for repairs when we are totally broke here...

I don't have the internet at home however so, I don't know when I can check this thread again, probably within the next day or so though.

Thanks for any help dudes.

What kind of monitor is it? CRT or TFT? If you can try a different monitor as in old CRT it is not unknown for individual colours to go wrong, though I think it may well be your graphics card. Try the obvious, reseating the graphics card, checking connections etc.

Re: Graphics problem red stuff everwhere....

Is this a tower PC or laptop? and are the lines vertical or horizontal?
If its a PC silly question but have you tried unplugging the vga/dvi lead from both the monitor and graphics card and remaking the connection? (Do this with the power off btw)
Normally if a graphics cards fritzed you'll get a checker board effect on screen, the flickering sounds to me more like a bad connection

Re: Graphics problem red stuff everwhere....

Thanks for the fast replies guys, I can't try it now because im at my moms work, with AC lol

I only have one PCIe slot, so I can't change slots hmm but I will recheck how well its in there I guess.

Its a flat screen monitor, not CRT... I don't have another screen though so... I dunno what to do about checking that...

The lines are vertical, and when things move on the screen, mouse etc, the lines flicker horizontally off the moving object. When graphics are rendered the red lines form around and outline things on the screen, they aren't totally rigid when stuff happens on the screen.

You could also try a quick graphics card driver update, it may have gotten corrupted

this sounds like driver issue to me, broken videocard would be worst case and unlikely

P.S. i did too much oc to my 8800 with similar effect once - i just let it rest for a day or 2 and it was fine again
