WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU HAVE THE MODIFIED CONTENT ERROR

---> First of all, make sure you are on the current build.  To check, open your First Strike Launcher, go to File -> Preferences and "Version" is your current build number.

If your version number does not correspond to the current build, something on your computer is blocking the Launcher's update function. If you have a firewall (or a router) make sure the Launcher has full access to the internets. If you're on Vista you might have to run the Launcher as an administrator.

---> Make sure PunkBuster is updated, check HERE for information on updating.

---> If you updated from 1.3, make sure you use the Launcher and not the shortcut.  If you use the shortcut, the mod will not update nor launch properly.  If you do not have the launcher, you can download it from THIS location.

---> Try a different server.  Servers known to be up to date are: DSGaming.net, and  Rougetribe.com

---> If you updated from 1.3, it is possible that there was a problem in your incremental patch installation.  I recommend you download FS 1.4 Full from HERE and first uninstall First Strike before installing the Full installation.

---> If you are new to BattleField 2142, you may want to check that your Vanilla (unmodded) version of the game is up to date.  The current version of vanilla is 1.5.  If you are unsure of your current version, go to your Community -> Mods/Games tab ingame, and Bf2142 "Version" should say "1.50". First Strike will say "1.2", this is a bug, ignore it.

---> Make sure you are starting the game using the launcher.  If you attempt to start the game from a custom shortcut, or via your Games/Mods tab ingame, you will NOT be able to play on online servers.

---> VISTA users, make sure you run the launcher in ADMINSTRATOR mode.  To do this right click your shortcut and go to properties. Click the "Compatibility" tab and check the "Run as administrator" box then hit apply. Right clicking and selecting "Run as administrator" may NOT work.

---> VISTA users, we've had several players reporting that after they turned off UAC (or disabled it just for First Strike) they have had no further Modified Content errors.

---> To turn off UAC, follow any of the methods described HERE. If you don't want to completely disable UAC, forum user Daf confirms using the method he describes works for First Strike. You will need THIS program.

In summary all you have to do is to install the tool, create a new database for an application (FirstStrike.exe), click "none" when asked for compatibility mode and check "run as invoker"

Then SAVE the database, name it and place the file wherever you prefer

The last you have to do then is to tell windows that there is a new database by opening a DOS-prompt (Start->Run->"cmd" and hit Enter)

And write the command SDBINST followed by a gap and then the path to your database you just created

I saved my database (FSfix_UACoff.sdb) in the Battlefield2142 root folder so f.ex. my command line is

SDBINST C:\Spielhalle\bf2142\FSfix_UACoff.sdb

---> If you after all of these steps still have problems with Modified Content errors, you might have come across a rare bug in the Launcher updating function. The bug will result in a corrupt copy of First Strike. The only solution then is to delete the update builds (located in \Battlefield 2142\mods), reinstall First Strike, and update it again.

Help, I get Modified Content Errors in Vanilla now!

---> If you get this error, open your First Strike Launcher, start the mod and then exit again.  It is possible the launcher did not replace your shaders after exiting the game properly, and this should do it.

---> Try starting up the First Strike Launcher, click the red X icon on the launcher then re-start vanilla.

---> If you still get this error, Check your Program Files\Battlefield 2142\mods\bf2142 folder for a shaders_client.zip.bak file. If you find it, try renaming it to shaders_client.zip then launching 2142.

Still having problems?

If none of these things has helped you, please make another thread describing your problem. When making a thread, be sure to include as much information as possible. What exactly is happening, and when is it happening. Did you install the full 1.4 version or the incremental through the launcher?

Or, come talk to us on First Strikes IRC channel.  For those of you who have an IRC client installed, we are #First-Strike at Quakenet.org.

Re: WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU HAVE THE MODIFIED CONTENT ERRROR

P.S. - another think to check is the EA downloader... They've run an update and your VirusScan software/Firewall needs to allow access AGAIN - yeah, screwy - but it's happened to me twice.

Run 2142 Vanilla - make sure it's up to date, allow the EA Downloader to do it's update thing... wait for it... wait for it... make sure the VS/Firewall is allowing access.

Did the trick for me...

Re: WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU HAVE THE MODIFIED CONTENT ERRROR

Cripes!  There's something else going on!

I can NOT join the Bandomeer map - no matter what server is running it.  The Bandomeer map is the ONLY map that still gives me this modified content error... any idea why?

Re: WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU HAVE THE MODIFIED CONTENT ERRROR

I just fixed my "modified content error" by uninstalling both fs and 2142 (and deleting the 2142 folder in Program files/electronic arts) and then reinstalling 2142, patching it to 1.5 and then installing FS full 1.4.

To play I went to the start menu and loaded it from there. Worked for me.

First post updated. Added instructions on how to disable UAC completely, or just for First Strike

Your first suggestion worked a few times but I still seem to get the MC error.  I found a file named 'shaders_client.zip.bak' and tried renaming it but it wouldn't let me seeing how there was already a file named 'shaders_client.zip'.  Both were the same size so i took the one ending in bak out of the folder and placed it on my desktop.  I'm going to see if that did the trick.

Re: WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU HAVE THE MODIFIED CONTENT ERRROR

the .bak file is the original Vanilla shaders file. If there's already a shaders_client.zip file, either remove it and rename the .bak file to .zip, or start FS through the Launcher and then quit, that should also revert the Vanilla file back.
