Heh, we had that once in a test map. I certainly hope we reintroduce it as it was epic.

cool

Regarding the mortar, as everyone in the know has already said. Use the Mortar Freerunner correctly and it is the most effective supressive and destructive fire weapon on the map. The problem is people tend to charge in with it like it is a front line tank, which is exactly the right way to get you killed quick, but however is not the correct way to use the Mortar Freerunner, and another problem is that it is also best used while employing teamwork (unfortunately the idea of serious teamwork is lost on some players), hence the need for a foward spotter (like you would need using real world artilery) to paint targets for you to engage. If people hold the Freerunner back and use the targetting system you just watch the kills mount up.

Another way to use the Mortar Freerunner is to employ supressive fire on a CP that your team is attacking. Your shells have distance markers as you fire them so you can see how far away they are hitting. Use the distance marker on an enemy held CP to judge how far away it is and rain death on them from a distance softening them up for your team to engage. The Mortar Freerunner is one of the most useful assets on the map, you just need to know how to use it correctly.

Here endeth the lesson.

Re: We need some real artillery.

Using World in Conflict as an example, we could add one artillery type that fired a volley of 10 or more not-so-heavy ballistic missiles that hit over a larger area, and a 'heavy cannon' that fires one or two heavy shells with a fairly large blast radius, for then to need some time to reload. The Imperial Fixed Artillery platform from Force Commander would be excellent for this task.

And just so it's been mentioned on the forums, too - I'd love smoke grenades for the Mortar Freerunner. Zero in on the target area, fire the smoke shell, bathe the target area in a huge smoke cloud. Recharge (which would take time, not the least because smoke clouds would possibly lag the game if used in numbers wink )and repeat as necessary.

Re: We need some real artillery.

I'd love smoke grenades to cover the area with smoke... instead they currently lay down a small cloud which is really small, doesn't always cover well and lasts nowhere near long enough...

I'd like that, and the mortar to be FIXED before smoke shells get put in... though I'd love smoke shells.

Re: We need some real artillery.

On Maps with the Imps attacking a orbital strike or ion strike could be used for the Imps (BF 2142 Commander Style).

The simplest way to use the Mortar Freerunner is to open up a squad an lock it.
Use the map to set an attack marker on a control point an fire the mortar in that direction. So you don't need a spotter...

Re: We need some real artillery.

You don't need attack markers for CP's, as CP markers already show your distance to them wink . But yes, locked artillery squads are the way to go.

Re: We need some real artillery.

I don't think we really need an arty tank at all. Not on the maps its been placed on.
Sitting back and shelling things seems detrimental to dynamic gameplay.
