Re: Need a parashute

Also, taking the PSG from FS, which in turn took it from EU, isn't the same as adding chutes because PSGs actually exist in the universe. Parachutes, however, exist only on Adumar (see "Starfighters of Adumar"), but are never mentioned elsewhere. It's true that space pilots can eject and survive in vacuum for a short while, and the pilot model could probably be given floaters so that it didn't fall to its death upon ejection, but as of now it's not possible to effectively recover Extra-vehicular pilots, so  there's no real reason for pilots to bail out.

As for parachutes gameplay-wise, I echo what others have said - I don't miss them, I actually find it far more fun to land a fighter or other aircraft and run than to just "punch out". Parachutes, as was also said, also lead to unwanted situations, such as pilots parachuting into parked vehicles, or lone-wolves using fighters as personal transports.

Oh, and welcome to the forum, Freeway smile !

They don't want parachutes because it wasn't specifically seen in the movies, but any advanced civilization like that would have had parachutes, probably even jetpacks for ejection from the fighters.

I never saw any personal shields in the Galactic Civil War movies.  They decided to just barrow that from Vanilla 2142.  Can you say HYPOCRISY?

Really Duke? So, your telling me that these advanced fighters, capable of flying in atmosphere and space, leaving a planets gravitational pull and reaching orbit...relied on a PARACHUTE to save their pilots? Not seeing how useful a parachute is in space...

Majority of fighters did have an ejector seat or ejectable cockpit, but this would be only of benefit if the pilot utilised a fully enclosed environmental suit, like the TIE pilots. Also, based on modern ejection seats and pilots equipment, this woul still mean that any parachute would be fitted to an area of the seat called the headbox.

As the seat ejects (within seconds of pulling the handle) explosives fire above the pilots head, shattering the cokpit/canopy, or fire a set of detbolts which completely free the canopy from the ship. The seat begins to rise on a piston, again fired by explosives, before a set of rockets fire to launch the seat even ffaster and further from the craft. As the seat tears from the ship, vital connections and life support systems are severed, built in to a seat is a small oxygen supply, this begins to feed to the pilot if he is above a certain height, controlled by a sealed barometric system. A drogue is fired from the seat to bring it under some kind of control, due to fast flowing airflow the seat will be swinging and spinning. After the drogue has stabilised the seat a little, the main chute is fired. Again, these are controlled by barometric systems.

So..parachutes in space, not going to happen. Parachutes on infantry maps? No soldier I know of enters a city with a parachute as his standard kit. Unless of course he happens to be jumping from a plane to get in to the city.

As for shields, check the gungan shield. Thats a personal shield, just on a bigger level, so the tech existed. Droideka's deployed small personal shields as well. Just in case you need to reaquaint yourself, try reading up on them:

Can you say OWNED?

I must say Duke, you have been well and truly PWNED!

Also I would like to add this thread is a re-run of at least two older ones and so is deserving of Picard:

well, if your l33t you don't need a parachute to jump from orbit into a vehicle... wink
You only need to press the enter key and hit the right spot. It's nothing difficult to learn, some of the members of our campaign train it (because our mod has im most case only 6 pickup kits with chutes). You can use the Squadleaders ATTACK Order to set a waypoint / target for your flight.

But it's also a great source of lulz, if such a skydiver trys to enter an already occupied vehicle. Sad there is no blood in BF2, because in such cases the vehicle would get a brand new red & gore paintjob lol

Re: Need a parashute

LOL Twiggy!  Thanks for the lesson on how ejection seats work, didn't know that.  True, parachutes would be useless in space, but fighters often fly into the atmosphere of planets where they would be useful.  Jetpacks would be useful in space.  Parachutes in the Star Wars universe would likely be made of material that is much thinner and therefore much more compact than parachute material that exists on Earth today.  Therefore, parachutes could be standard equipment for the common Imperial/Rebel soldier as they are often transported on flying craft.

As for the Gungan and Droideka shields, those were clone wars era technology.  The personal shield technology had disappeared by the time of the Galactic Civil War era and did not appear in episodes IV, V, or VI.

First Strike is suffering from a dwindling number of players.  I think that parachutes, jetpacks, and other exciting things might help stem the decline.  Just trying to help, thanks for chewing me out.

Re: Need a parashute

Well these 'exciting things' aren't what we want to have infecting our mod :]

We will add in things that aren't movie lore accurate where we see the opportunity for enhanced gameplay. The PSG is one of these things, it adds a unique feel to FS firefights which really no other shooters have.

Re: Need a parashute

Usefull in space... alright.

TIE fighter, I'm looking at. 2 very highpowered ION engines extremely large delta-V, blasters capable of melting metal instantly.  Jetpack, maybe a delta-V of 5 (m/s/s) in space... coupled with what would be a hand-blaster, if that (standard pilot arnament), which would maybe scorch infantry armour. Naw, jetpacks aren't usefull in space. What are you going to do? Eject and spend 2 hours flying back to your ISD?

As for parachutes, we'll look at costs here. Armed forces want to limit spending, with maximum effectiveness in battles.  One thing they will look at is kit, they want their troops to be equipped with what they *need*, and nothing else.  If a Rebel General was sending his INFANTRY into a GROUND skirmish, he wouldn't waste money on giving the infantry parachutes. They'd have to carry a backback around with them (which contains the parachute for easy deployment). It may not be heavy, but its more baggage, not good for running around with, bulky and reduces the ability to hide.  As for Imperials, well, where the hell is a stormtrooper going to put a parachute? Hide it in his helmet? Or maybe jetpack boosters in his boots.

There is a big sheild generator in Episode 6. No, its not personal, but it takes up an entire bunker complex. I'd imagine if the technology existed to power such a massive sheild and project it to a structure in orbit existed, there would be some more "personal" versions aswell.

It's not like they would have lost the tech from the prequels anyways XD
