It's just looking cooler all the time, check out that new look Recognizer (the big red thing that looked like a space invader, for those too young to remember the original wink).

Re: Tron Legacy

More TRON news, here's a pic of Daft Punk as they appear in the new movie:

They're doing the soundtrack in case you didn't know already, and from what we've heard in the trailers it sounds awesome. There is a 90 second clip from the movie sountrack on the following link:

Re: Tron Legacy

Went to see the 23 minute IMAX 3D preview last Thursday, was pretty good. If you want a rundown of what was featured check out this review of it over at SFX:

Here are my thoughts on what I saw:

I saw this the other night too, found it pretty spectacular to watch once we got to the 3D scenes within the grid (the real world footage was 2D, to give that Wizard of Oz style transition when you transfer to the cyberworld I guess). The 3D got a little blurry when the camera did a fast pan, made it hard for the 3D effect to register, thought that was just an issue with me having to wear prescription glasses underneath the 3D ones, but maybe not.

In general the thing did look really sumptuous, and gave a nice graphical update of the digital Tron world reflecting that more photo real quality that you get with games these days with cool shiny surfaces and atmospheric effects etc.

Also you don’t have to worry too much about spoilers as the clips that were shown didn’t really give too much plot away, well no more than you would catch from watching the trailer.

I think the most important thing will be if they can pull off a decent emotional journey for the characters in this film, if they can’t do that it may come across a little too much like a spectacular but cold tech demo. Hopefully they’ll get that element nailed.

All in all really looking forward to this one.

So looks promising and has to be said the visuals really wow on an IMAX screen, the 3D is eye-popping, and the sound, especially the Daft Punk soundtrack positively thunders out at you, should make for a pretty phenomenal movie experience if as I say above they can nail a good solid emotional core to the story.

Re: Tron Legacy

Saw Tron on Imax 3D the other night, have to say it did blow me away, though I was sat a little too close to the screen so it was a bit full on with your peripheral vision having to come into play so you could see everything that was going on, and I got a touch of double vision sometimes where the 3D didn't seem to be working correctly, don't know if that was due to my proximity to the screen, the 3D glasses and my glasses not working well together or what. Might have to go see it again and get a seat further back to see if that makes a difference.

Despite all this though, and though it doesn't sound like it was from the first paragraph, I found the film to be quite thrilling, and certainly very interesting and visually impactful and a good continuation of the original Tron mythology. The only real weak spot was Michael Sheen's character which seemed a little too hammy, which is unusual for him as I usually like the him in the roles he plays, but he just didn't quite seem to fit in this one.

Clu and the younger version of Kevin Flynn was interesting, but they didn't quite get him pulled off. He always looked a little off, kinda like the characters in the hyper real Final Fantasy movie. It was never so bad as to become distracting, but you always knew he was CGI. The same guys who did this effect worked on Benjamin Button, but it seemed to work better in that context than here. Perhaps because we know what Jeff Bridges looked like when he was younger, but we don't know what Brad Pitt looks like as a little old midget.

As to be expected the Lightcycle and Lightdisc battles are effortlessly cool and a cracking update of the concept from the original movie, in addition they have a fantastic aerial dogfight utilising the same principles which just gives it added dimension and depth that makes for seriously thrilling viewing, and there is plenty more eyecandy to feast your eyes on, and a fair few interesting twists in the plot. Does it rival the original for innovation and heart? Well it is hard to be as innovative as the original was in this day and age, Avatar obviously got there first last year with blow your socks off 3D visuals, but it does look cutting edge with an absolutely gorgeous updating of the classic Tron aesthetic. As for heart and story, it could go interesting places with a franchise as I believe is in the works, and it ends well but with room for that continuing franchise. There is some good emotional meat in between the action set pieces too, so it does have heart, and if Sam Flynn grows up a little he could become an interesting character in his own right, right now he is a bit one dimensional, but there is potential there. It is a bit like Star Wars with Luke being not that interesting to start with, but being surrounded by interesting characters. Kevin Flynn is very much doing an old Obi-wan Kenobi in this one, showing his son the ropes and all that.

So what is my final opinion on Tron Legacy? Worthy successor to the original Tron, builds nicely on what was there before and does a great job of updating the feel of the original Tron for a 21st century audience, great Daft Punk soundtrack which couldn't be more apt, and definitely worth seeing on Imax in 3D, though you might want to sit towards the back to drink it all in. This year's Avatar? Maybe. Get it watched.
