Topic: CTD'ing ONLY When Connecting To Online Games

Hi guys. I'm having a rather unique problem. It doesn't look like anyone else is having the exact same issue and I can't find info on it in the forums, so I'm hoping someone can help me.

First off, both 2142 vanilla and FS are fully updated to the latest versions (I'm not using the 2142 vanilla 1.51 Beta update) along with Punkbuster, and I have the FS preference set to "widescreen +1" for my widescreen TV.

I am running:
Windows 7 64-Bit Home Edition
8gigs of DDR2 RAM
ATi Radeon HD 5750 gfx card
(I have to double check my processor, but it's MORE than enough to run the game).

Now, both 2142 vanilla and FS work WONDERFULLY, I have the gfx settings maxed out and both games run buttery smooth. The single player for FS works fantastically (E-P-I-C addition, BTW big_smile ), and I can even host a LAN game. The problem comes when I attempt to play First Strike online. I always check to make sure I am connecting to a server running the latest version, so that's not the issue. However, when connecting to an online game it CTDs and I get a Windows error message saying something along the lines of, "Windows has encountered an unexpected error". Please help. I can't understand why everything is working so superbly except this. Which is basically the heart of the game. sad

Did you check the Gigabytes? tongue

Sorry.  But seriously,  how far into the map loading process do you get?  At What point does it CTD?

Re: CTD'ing ONLY When Connecting To Online Games

Hi Mechag, thank you for your comments about singleplayer, glad to hear you're enjoying it.

This does sound unusual, did you try the stuff from the First Strike newspost some time ago that mentioned some common problems and fixes?

(From News Post)

CRASH WHEN CLICKING DEPLOY

When a map loads and you click the deploy button it can be one of a number of reasons.

1) The server is running a different version of First Strike. Check you are running the latest version of First Strike (1.5 at time of writing). As First Strike has the ability to download incremental builds produced by the development team, you must ensure you allow these to install. You can check which 'build number' you have installed by clicking on File, Preferences in the launcher window, the build number is displayed in the field 'Version'.

2) A recent patch has not yet been applied to the server you attempted to join, try a different server.

3) You have attempted to join the Development server. This server is used to test new content by the First Strike team. Attempting to join it using the publically released files will result in a crash to desktop.

Other crashes and game freezes can often be solved by clearing your cache, this is found in My Documents, Battlefield 2142, Mods, FirstStrike. Just delete everything in the cache folder. The game will repopulate with contents but it will cause you to load shaders again when you first start loading.

MAPS NOT LOADING, STOPPING AROUND 60%

1) Go to your BF2142 folder, eg C:Program FilesElectronic ArtsBattlefield 2142

2) Locate the file "radial.cdb"

If you do not see this file in the folder then you need to go to folder options tell Windows to show hidden files. You also (or instead) have to uncheck the box just a little bit below it, which is "Hide protected operating system files".
(For some reason this is a protected file and will not show if you ask to show normal hidden files.)

3) Rename the file to oldradial.cdb (or something similar so you know what it is) and start your game.

The game will create a new radial.cdb file on it's own.

(/news post)

Just to rule out some other issues, have you manually edited any files, eg to increase number of bots?

Did you delete First Strike 1.4 before installing First Strike 1.5? This should also include deleting the 1.4 FS launcher and installing the one bundled with 1.5.

You wrote that you have set preferences to widescreen +1, could you double check what you have entered in the launchers preferences window, you may have just posted a type. The correct entry should read +widescreen 1. Personally, I play in widescreen but rather than use +widescreen 1 I instead enter the correct resolution, this is written in the same area but in this form: +szx 1920 +szy 1080 (obviously change the figures to your own settings!).

Try those then report back, I shall have a think and see if I can come up with any other stuff.

Re: CTD'ing ONLY When Connecting To Online Games

Hi, Twigs. Thanks for the prompt reply. smile I did see the post you're referring to when I was scouring the forums, but nothing in it helped. I couldn't find anything that addresses my specific issue. It's really bizarre.

I have not altered any of the game files, and I'm going off of memory when I mentioned the "widescreen +1" setting. I'm not at home at the moment. I followed the directions carefully, so I'm sure I put it in like how you said. I can double check it, but in any case, it shouldn't be able to run without it having been entered correctly, right?

It's been a while since I installed FS 1.5, so I'm a little hazy on what I specifically did, but I do remember that I was very meticulous in following the installation instructions for FS 1.5 to avoid any potential problems. Which came anyway. lol

All the fixes I found didn't help simply because my game works incredibly well in every game mode... except for online. lol It fully loads the game and then CTDs when I click 'Deploy' only when attempting to join an online match. Then I get the generic "Windows has encountered an unexpected error" message. LAN, singleplayer, all that works beautifully. So does 2142 vanilla, which I can play online.

I'll double check a few things when I get home tonight and report back.

Re: CTD'ing ONLY When Connecting To Online Games

It sounds like the servers have a different version then you. Try checking for new builds on the launcher.

Re: CTD'ing ONLY When Connecting To Online Games

Okay, so I double checked my game and I did have the widescreen preference set to '+widescreen 1' and I am running build 1015... and for some reason I can now connect and play online. lol I don't know what happened 'cause I didn't change anything, but for some reason it doesn't crash and give me an error message anymore. So, yeah... I'll see you on the battlefield! w00t! lol

Thanks for the help though, guys. wink
