Topic: At wits end, unable to start bf 2142 or FS

I have literally spent a few days  trying to start up bf2142 (The only reason being I want ot play first strike again, ans also for the upcoming hoth update).

I even bought another disc to play first strike however I can't seem to start either bf2142 or first strike for the life of me.

I could run it for a while but then suddenly it stopped and I got no error message just a screen flash and then nothing. ( I did upgrade my CPU)

List of what I have done after a massive google search sprawling around 30 tabs, lol.

Reinstalled the game many times and repatched to 1.5.

I thought it might be the disc so I tried the 1.51 patch but still the same problem.

I've updated my graphics card drivers.

I've tried running in several compatability modes an as admin.

I've turned of UAC.

I've tried running from the disc.

Tried deleting the bf2142 folder in my documents, I took out my E drive(External HD) which has my documents on it too, then reinstalled still no luck.

No luck....

Anyone else have anymore suggestions I literally am at wits end with this sad

Oh and my specs -

ATI HD Radeon 6870,
AMD Phenom x4 965,
4fb Ram,
Windows 7,
Tried various versions of the game none will launch.

Do you run a widescreen monitor? May be that your game is crashing because it cannot run at the resolution it wants or is not supported by your monitor/graphics card. For First Strike this is an easy fix, simply start the FS Launcher then click file then preferences and enter +widescreen 1 in the field titled arguments.

it does not seem to be the widescreen parameter problem.

what exactly are the symptoms?

what i would do in that case is:
- download latest chipset packages;
- download latest catalyst package;
- remove fs and bf2142 completely (incl. registry entries)
- completely remove my documents\battlefield2142 directory
- remove old chipset and catalyst packages
- restart, then clean with ccleaner for example
- install the downloaded driver packages
- reinstall bf2142, then patch to 1.50
- install fs

you have upgraded your cpu, you say?

tell me the model and parameters of your psu, mainboard, and cpu, as the psu might have a weak 12V lane to support the new platform.

Thx for the responses guys, after weeks of trying out different google solutions I've found mine.

Now I'm a little bewildered but I've tried it out (yes it sounds stupid, however im no technical moron) however with my ipod plugged in the game starts hoorah.

Tbh I didn't believe it myself then took it out, same old not starting just a screen flash no error message etc, replugged it in and it starts up. Tried it a few times and it came up witht he same result. This is really odd to me but anyway atleast it works. My guess is it has something to do with my ipod coming up as an E drive... well I really don't know.

Anyway I'm guessing the reason I'm CTDing when launching FS is because of the 1.51 patch (I have the disc in though). I tried to widescreen fix but it didn't work. I can play bf 2142 now as well with no crashes.

Will probably tweak this again so I can play at the weekend if those are still the days where activity peaks?

Yes, FS probably isn't starting due to the 1.51 patch.

*Fixing it is easy but I'm still trying to elicit responses from people in order to get a real fix out!

One thing that WILL help with FirstStrike however is entering the +widescreen 1 bit in the preferences field.

Thanks for posting that solution.  Wouldn't have thought of that.

Yes, weekends are still the best time.  But some are venturing on during the week these days, so you may still get some good games in.

Btw also checking through things it now says my bf2142 folder which would be normally in my documents is in my ipod... so odd hmm
