You may be better off with 3dSMax if you're just starting out. Most of the BF2 modding community is using Max - as this thread is regarding; there is little to no info on doing animations in Maya for BF2.
Either way, neither application is cheap and your best bet for getting a copy at a reasonable price would be an educational outlet. Students get much cheaper licenses.
