Do we have a fix for the launcher throwing up an "error connecting to update server" message? I seem to vaguely remember one, but can't recall it. Or was it just an error thrown up by the server being out of commission temporarily or something?

Usually a local problem regarding firewall, or they had a faulty fsbuild file.   I think that's a problem people are best posting about.

Sometimes, just trying again works.

Does the first strike launcher need to be in the mods folder inside 2142 next to the folder named 2142 or inside the first strike mod folder? atm its in program files (x86) and when launching it says i dont have first strike downloaded.
(using vista and just downloaded game from a delux i bought yesterday)

The launcher can be anywhere, with vista are you running the program with admin mode enabled? (right click the icon and choose properties it's a tick box on there.) Have you downloaded the correct patches for 2142? (version 1.51 here- http://www.blackintel.org/firststrike/downloads) Is your first strike folder deffinately in your mods folder for bf2142? (probably C:/program files/electronic arts/bf2142)

Yes its running as admin and im at 1.51 patch. and its in the mod folder right next to another folder titled 2142.

got it to work ^.^;;  but 1 more thing.. when trying to connect to the servers it says ive got the wrong version.

Someone over on ModDB us asking for a fix to the mouse pointer disappearing bug. I thought we had a fix for that, but I can't find it for the life of me.
