Topic: Planetside 2

Now that the Master Server is down, I thought I'd invite y'all to play Planetside 2 with BlackIntel and I this Sunday.

Planetside 2 is a free to play (and NOT pay2win) "MMOFPS". Servers support up to something like 1000 players at once per instance, spread out across 3 factions.  You can get some really awesome fights when you end up in a 3 way battle over a base, I think Planetside has given me "OMG THIS IS AWESOME" moments more than any other game I've played.

It's like First Strike in that it's incredibly Teamplay oriented. If you don't work as a group you just won't win. A single person in a 100+ person fight isn't going to do much. Working as a squad though, if you play well you can really change the course of a battle. It's quite arcady too, it's quite nice to step away from the constant booming, screaming, swearing and blood spatters and stuff from the newer Battlefields.

For DUKE, one of the classes has a jetpack, unfortnately it doesn't have walkers, but it does have heavy-armoured infantry units which are strong and stuff, that may hit the spot for you. For the rest of us, the guns for the faction we play with feel a lot like FS guns - Fire a lot of bullets, generally inaccurate unless bursting while crouched.

It's a good game, it's available for free on Steam, although once it's downloaded make sure to launch it and run thru some more patches. Steam doesn't get all of the patches unfortuantely, it just updates to major versions and the launcher handles the rest.

If you want to play, I'll be on on Sunday from 8PM UK.  I'm also considering doing some kind of introductary session on Friday at the same time. We'll see if people turn up.  Once you're launcher, we play as the Terran Republic faction on the Miller server. Once you're on, find the social tab and add Gwynzer to your friends list.

Alternatively add me on Steam (Who doesn't have steam these days?), my name on it is Gwynzer. You can join BI teamspeak too for a chat at ts3.blackintel.org. Clicking that link should launch your TS to our server if it's installed.  We have a few BI old faces who still play fairly regularly, and I know that there's a lot of people in this community who we'd love to get back in touch with <3

Re: Planetside 2

I gave it a shot once, didnt enjoy it much. I'm sure if I gave it more time I would. Dunno.

I added you to Steam anyway. For anyone else my Steam name is JayBiggS.

Re: Planetside 2

Planetside gives a context to the battle you fight.
You are fighting with your squad on a huge huge map for control of facilities. The areas are controlled like regular games of FS/2142- you grab the control points and shoot chumps who try to steal them back.

Whereas in Fs/2142 when you win a match, it moves to the next map, in PS the territory flips and you are now in control of it.
The engies can patch up the emplaced weapons, you can spawn vehicles/aircraft (this is done manually!) and you can either choose to dig in and hold it or move out and get the next territory.

Morale plays a much larger factor here than in a regular FPS. Whereas in FS, a player might ragequit the server if he is frustrated enough, in PS- an unorganised group of enemy might leave the territory en masse if it seems that they are not going to win.
If you break their spirit, you've already won.

Combat is assymetric- you can roll into a lightly defended territory with a massive zerg rush of bodies and so there are fights that you cannot win.
And you are not required to fight them- outmaneuvering the enemy on the continent map can be just as effective as trouncing them locally.

Air transport/drops are a dynamic and powerful affair and unlikely to have you teamkill your entire squad which may be a relief for any of you suffering from PLSD (post Lambda stress disorder)

Overall, the game is not a great lone wolf experience. Fun is to be had that way but joining up with a group is the way to go.

Re: Planetside 2

I have to admit, the "new player experience" in PS2 is awful.  The tutorial starts with that crap "DUR HOW TO MOVE IN AN FPS" thing, and doesn't explain many of the super important mechanics. It does explain some though, so sit through it. It only takes 10 mins or so.

Once you're done with the tutorial, the game decides to spawn you in a drop pod over a fight (sometimes not even a fight where there are friendlies). Because your pod is big, and makes a big WOOOOSH and probably lands somewhere obviouss, as soon as you get out of it you get destroyed by someone.

After that first experience though, things get better.  As Angel says, once you get squadded up the game improves massively. I'll try to see about running a quieter event than normal on Sunday so I can spend more time teaching and explaining the game mechanics as we play.

Except when I'm flying, then PLSD will come back full throttle. And just like FS, I *LOVE* flying the transport aircraft big_smile

Re: Planetside 2

Planetside 2 may not be a game that I enjoy all that much by myself, but it turns into one of the best online gaming experiences you'll ever play when in a group. There aren't any other games quite like it.

We FS players have always been teamwork oriented, it would be great to see the old faces playing other games with us.

P.S. Don't fly with Gwyn. He tries to fly the Galaxy (Sentinel) like a mosquito (A-Wing). You can imagine the results.

Re: Planetside 2

Hope to see some of you guys on tonight. Again, the game is free on steam (tho the time it'll take to download and patch, unless you start immediately you probably won't be with us tonight sad ).

We do play every sunday as as much as possible thru the week, so catch you on at some point.

And my flying is amazing, that's what he means. I fly it like an A-Wing and get thru all the smallest gaps and stuff. Fantastic.
