Re: At Last! DICE to make the new SWBF!!!

I totally agree.  I am not willing to pay full price for Battlefront.

Re: At Last! DICE to make the new SWBF!!!

The gameplay does lack depth going off of what we got in the Beta. Hoping some of the other game modes we haven't seen yet give us more depth, but as the lack of classes and a few other factors such as trying to distance itself from Battlefield style gameplay seem to be their M.O. That lack of depth is likely to remain due to the design of the core gameplay. Still, I can hope.

With regards to the DLC package, yes, it is expensive paid for all in one go, but I actually have a lot of time for the BF4 premium style DLC model, there is far more content than was available in the vanilla game, new maps and modes and considerable improvements to the original maps and game mechanics that you just wouldn't see without the DLC business model. You're getting like an additional game or two of content via DLC updates, and the drip feeding of new content over the years mean that this is still my primary go to game on Xbox 360. So it adds significant longevity to the original game. If they do this with Battlefront and hopefully enrich the gameplay and add depth as well as new maps and locations etc over time, that will be no bad thing.

I agree with a lot of what he says, but he's also a bit off the mark in some areas.

Re: At Last! DICE to make the new SWBF!!!

I can certainly see the reasoning to make the gameplay simple so that it can easily be picked up by casual gamers.   I also can understand the focus on developing incredible looking maps while scaling back on the eras and teams available to play.   It's true that the run and gun gameplay is more in line with the movie action.   I am just disappointied with the complete lack of any cooperative mechanics:  Revive, Healing, supplies, gunner and pilot positions on vehicles.    All the stuff that makes a game feel like you are working together in a battle are stripped out.   Everyone is an Army of one.   Everyone is going to fight for the power ups.  No one is going to sacrifice to try to save someone else.

Hoth is also a big let down because it doesn't feel like Hoth.    With everyone running around all over the map, there is no trench defense from the ATATs while Echo base is being evacuated.   Not to mention vehicles that were not on Hoth.     If this was an alternate gamemode and there was a classic game mode, then that would be fine.

It just seems to me that the gameplay became stale very quickly.

Re: At Last! DICE to make the new SWBF!!!

Yeah, it is the lack of the teamwork related gameplay aspects combined with a certain lack of authenticity with regards to the locations and sequences they have decided to render as maps which has me most miffed personally.

With regards to creating or releasing a more expansive selection of locations, or other eras, I fully expect that to be addressed with DLC, to what extent will this deal with these shortcomings is the only question.

^^ This with bells on.

If we'd managed to finish Hoth before things went south with multiplayer support, we'd have handled it very differently to what they have done here.

Re: At Last! DICE to make the new SWBF!!!

I see the potential for a spike in interest after the intitial launch that quickly wanes until the next DLC expansion, with each successive release generating less interest.

Now, new gamemodes could easily be added to increase interest, but the side effect is that this divides the player base among more servers, which could result in low server counts for the older game modes as players are concentrating in the new ones.    There are ways to handle this.  Old gamemodes can be retired.   Events can be set up to temporarily add a new gamemode.

But the DICE model seems to be fixed on focusing on getting players to get regular paid DLCs.   Waiting until the price goes down means that you will be playing on low count servers because most players will be on the new DLC maps.

This just makes me interested in pursing moving First Strike to the Unreal engine.
