Topic: Testing a First Strike Update

That is right. First Strike, the Star Wars mod for BF2142 has been quiet for too long and it's to change that. A updated version of First Strike is ready for testing and will up on a test server soon. Just need some volunteers that want to play.

The test server will be hosted on a USA server, so it's best to if we keep it to USA players. The only requirement is a to be a fan of First Strike. The main thing we are testing is stability, looking for any bugs that cause the game to crash.

I expect that many of you are wondering, what happened and why did it take so long? Well, when EA dropped support for Battlefield 2142, it looked like it was the end of First Strike as an online game, so I started testing to see if the game could be still played offline in singleplayer, but found that offline singleplayer was buggy. I also explored the possibility to use parts of First Strike in fan made games being developed in other game engines. During that time the Revive Team came in and picked support for the game, allowing the game to be played online again. With renewed interest in First Strike, I enlisted a former First Strike dev to help update the mod. It was soon after that point that EA shut down the Revive Team accusing them of copyright infringement and at the same time shutting down free fan made Star Wars games. That sent waves through the Star Wars community which caused the the Galactic Civil War fan made Star Wars game, that I was helping to contribute with First Strike models, to voluntarily stop development.

Now that things have quieted a bit and the Reclamation team picked up to continue Battlefield 2142, it is time to re-look at First Strike again.

When EA bought the game development license for Star Wars, we did not know if we would have any issues with EA. However, with First Strike being around for over 10 years for an effectively dead game, it is not likely to run into any issues at this point.

Where do we go from here? I have few things I want to accomplish in two phases:

1. Phase 1: New full cleaned up installer that includes all previous patches as well as completely reworked Singleplayer/Coop support for Endor Clearing. This was all ready for final testing when the Revive Team was shut down. Now is a good time to dust it off, test it out and get it released to the fans.

New Launcher:

2. Phase 2: Clean up an add the best community made singleplayer maps into the mod, as well as expand the singleplayer support for existing maps, specifically to add move vehicles into Singleplayer and Coop.. This includes the Hoth Defense map. The team never got the AT-ATs be able to walk without issues, but they can be included in the map positioned in attack range of the trenches.

If your interested in helping to test, send me a PM: Dnamro

Re: Testing a First Strike Update

I wouldn't mind testing, should be fun. I have 2142 ready to go (I use BF2142 Hub... is that a problem?)

Re: Testing a First Strike Update

Jay,

Yes, Bf2142 hub is currently the only way to go that I know of.

New launcher I am working on:   https://drive.google.com/open?id=1WIsHV … TJk3o-NX1e

Extract into the mods\FirstStrike folder and run the launcher.   I will integrate it into the mod installer.   Currently if only has launch options, but I am still adding features like, a check for BF2142 Hub, web site links and possibly an updater.   I just don't have any long term support plans right now to bother with an updater.  I am using Game Launcher Creator.

What else am I missing from the launcher?

I created a full mod installer.  Here is the changelog:

Version 1.62 Changes:

- Includes all patches from 1.61, which primarily includes Parmel Invasion, Silver Station, Dathomir Prison, with some mod tweaks to reduce stability issues.
- Removed COOP from  Bandomeer due to stability issues.
- Endor Clearing COOP & SP reworked.  Full map supported to include the Ewok Water Village. Different gameplay set up for 16,32 and 64 modes.  16p is infantry only.  32p is MEspeeders vs AT-ST.  64p is AT-ST vs AT-PT.
- All other COOP maps have duplicate game modes for 16, 32 and 64 modes.

Full mod installer:

I will let you know when the server is up.

thanks!

Re: Testing a First Strike Update

server is up!

Updated Taloran server.zip :

the kits need to be the same number when switching COOP maps on a server.  I thought I had added a 5th pistol kit to the space maps, but apparently missed Talloran.   In testing earlier today, it was causing client lock ups when switching out of the map.  It appears to be only a COOP and SP issue.

Re: Testing a First Strike Update

Still crashing on Bandomeer.   It has to be something about having SP but not coop.    The kit changes in the gamemode don't work on a COOP server, so I tried to pull out COOP but leave SP in.   I think I just need to pull out SP until I can get COOP working  in regular in CQ not as dogfighting.

Re: Testing a First Strike Update

Sorry I haven't had any time to check anything out yet

Re: Testing a First Strike Update

Bandomeer is still crashing the server.  I did not find any other issues.  I tried going back to the 1.6 ver and even the 1.5.   i am thinking about releasing an update without Bandomeer until a solution can be found.

What I am thinking of trying is to rename Bandomeer to see if that works.   The next  step that I can think of is to test version 1.6 of the whole mod.   I figure it have to have stopped working sometime after 1.6, and probably when some resource was removed from the mod.
