Topic: Shields

So, I'm just curious, but during the production of GC there was a big discussion on the issue of shields for the craft that carry them in the movies.  Well, what are the dev's thoughts on this issue.

In my opinion, implementing shields would be a huge gameplay step forward, not just for this Mod team, but for the entire BF:2 community.  Shields would offer a limited amount of replenishable protection, and a new dynamic to gameplay.  I thought about this a while ago for the BF:1942 engine and I had a few ideas on the coding aspect, however it might be easier/simpler in the BF:2 engine. or maybe not.

One idea would be to create an invisible box/bubble (extremely low poly count) of mesh around the actual craft that would have collision with the laser/missiles.  The shield could be say 50% of the total health of the vehicle.  When weapons hit the shields, they would drop in power (health bar would decrease).  But the shields (health bar) would recharge slowly (self repair the vehicle) until its back to full, as long as the health doesn't go below 50%.  If the damage to the vehicle is over 50%, then the shield generator is destroyed (health stops regenerating), and the craft would have to go to a repair point.

Well thats my idea, what do you guys think?

Re: Shields

It sounds great, and makes sense in terms of lore. Whether we will be able to do it or not, I suppose our coders will have to decide that.

Re: Shields

Yes we hope to include shields for the starfighters that have them.

Re: Shields

Well weren't the shields in the movies weak? The Melinum Falcon took alot of damage when under attack by the TIE Fighters, and their shields were up. Echo Base was easy to over come too. I think there should be limited shielding, but nothing visable because that's too Star Trek like, even though I love both.

Hey, you got your Star Wars in my Star Trek!!

Re: Shields

well if you've ever played X-Wing or Tie Fighter, the shields in those games weren't very weak.  And I'm not sying that First Strike should be exactly like those games, but the space combat in those games was fun, and a little bit stronger shielding than the movies wouldn't hurt.  Plus, with my idea, if you continue to barrage the target with weapons fire, the shields wouldn't get a chance to replenish.  The fighter/ship being attacked would have to disengage to recharge

Re: Shields

I agree with you, they should be stronger than what the movie is. I haven't played TIE Fighter or XWING for SOOOOO long.

Re: Shields

hahaha, I know, I remeber buying X-Wing when I was like ten or so, so much fun.  I'll never forget what happens when you get captured by the imperials if you eject smile
