Topic: Space Combat 2142

Well of all the things that 2142 will help, I think foremost among them is space combat. Now this is going to be a really ramblish post, touching on abunch of little/ big ideas. If any of you have any ammendments, or ideas of your own, this is as good a place as any to post them. Now.
I think Titan mode will translate into a great space combat mode (no surprise there), but it I think that FS can go even further than dice is. If any of you remember, awhile ago I brought up commander controled ships, mixing a little rts in with your fps. As you all know, this comes standard in 2142. But instead of simply one ship, FS might be able to do several ones of different size and function. I bet alot of you have played star wars empire at war, a fantastic star wars rts. I think that FS might be able to capture alot of that gameplay, but even better, from a 1st person perspective. It seems to me, that the titans seem to be big vehicle chunks stuck together, some pieces destructable by themselves. For instance those panels on the ship's interior that are destructable. This leads me to think that larger parts of the moving ship might be destructable, for instance shield generators, engine, weapons, etc.
When two ships tango, each ship's 'captian' can tell his gunners where to shoot. Perhaps this could be done by him having a targeting scope that he could zoom in on the enemy ship with. Once he finds the point he wants them to hit (say the shield generator projector) he could press the fire button, which would launch a little invisible projectile that would stick to the target and show up on the gunners screen as a target symbol, and give a verbal message to the gunners to attack the shield generator.
Now I'm gunna jump around a little bit. GC had these pretty cool repair craft that could fly around the ships, repairing them. If there are destructable pieces to ships, then something like this would be really neccesary. But it was a little bit unrealistic to have this big ship with a funny 'repair beam' shooting out of it to repair ships. Perhaps instead of that odd route, repair ships could have a little space suit guy launcher. What I mean by this, is a position in the repair ship that luanches a guy in a space suit (in a similar fashion to those assualt pods) toward where his cross hair is aiming. When he hits the ship (hopefully the part he needs to repair) he could 'stick' to it, with a little magnetic clampy thing, and work on fixing it with a star wars wrench thingy. After which he could unstick and use little manevering jets to get himself back into the hangar bay. This would be an esspecially intresting thing to do in the middle of a battle, where the repairer hopes that a near bye blast wont shred him, or that a fighter dosn't bare down on him.
What do you guys think? Any ideas floating around in your heads?

Re: Space Combat 2142

That sounds like full on tie fighter/xwing alliance style flying right there. Only time will tell. The only way I could see that really being possible is if instead of having the reactors on the inside, instead have the pieces on the outside, like you suggest, and once all those are destroyed the ship goes bye bye. There could likely be AI controlled laser turrets, and if they could be anchored onto a moving ship then anything's possible.

Arrgh, yar... arr ar arrgh!

Re: Space Combat 2142

But wait, I got more. O so much more.
Heres something that probally hasn't been thought much about. Decompression. Like oh squeezey pooh theres a whole in the ship!
Picture this. Lets use a victory star destroyer for example. Perhaps in a few places on the ship's hull there could be a couple destructable pieces of armor, that go all the way through the ship into the interior. Like the it would be the roof of a hallway. Now these pieces aren't meant to feel like the very delicate pieces of fence in bf2. Rather they'll take a serious amount of fire power to punch through. First off, the ship's shields need to be down. Once there down the enemy ships will probally be firing down onto the victory's hull. These pieces of armor will take a serious, serious amount of a beeting (maybe like, thirty seconds of direct fire from heavy turbolasers). But once destroyed they could have a custom explosive effect, it might look like a decompression would, air rushing out with debris, with the oxegen burning on the way out of the whole, and teh explosion could last until the whole is fixed or the ship is destroyed. It could also have this neat swooshing sound. But thats just smoke an mirrors. The actual effect the decompression has is the 'explosion' described above does damage just like a normal one, but the area of teh damage would need to be carefully messed with so that it only strechtes into the afflicted hallway the whole is in. It would be lightish damage (justified by suffocating) but since the 'explosion' is constant people in that hall will die in under ten seconds.
Its important to note that there might only be one or two hallways with a destroyable piece of armored roof, this can't happen in the whole ship. But it would be a really neat thing. Imagine running through the ship as the battle rages outside, then taking a wrong turn to see a hallway litrely on fire, and exposed space above ya. Would certaintly up the intensity factor. Also, from the outside picture the view. You'd see fire blooming out from wholes in the hull, and fighters that draw too close could hear the swoosh noise...
And, despite risk of a too long post, I gota bring something else on my mind. Fighter squadrons. Imagine the great team work that could be had, now that you have squadmates in the air with you. Some good squad quick chatty things (on the talky rose thingy) will really effect combat. For instance the medic thing might be replaced (when in a ship, like the follow me/bail out replacement in bf2) by a 'he's on my tail!' quickchat. Perhaps points could even be awarded if a player aids that guy be shooting down the guy that hit him (perhaps kinda working like the kill assist thing).
Perhaps there could be other gameplay altering quickchat options. For instance a 'form up on me!' where squadmates that close within a certain distance of their leader will get a few extra points, a 'hit the bombers first', etc. Plus how about the squad leader being able to pin piont torpedo targets for the squad. It could launch a little invisible (sigh*) targeting beacon straight onto where he was pointing. This could show on fellow squadmates screens. It could look similar to the little squares that don't lock on in a bf2 fighter's HUD when he switches to bombs.
Well I'm all ideaed out for now. Whatcha all think?

Re: Space Combat 2142

I hope that it is possible to have the decompression idea. If possible it depends on where the hallways are located. If anything could the team have triggerable events that cause debris to fall in certain hallways and pipes and smoke all over the place as the starship nears destruction. It would really add to the realism to see a hallway burst in flames in front of you and then your faced with a decision. Go through or find another route.

This could also be done in the corridors of hoth as the imperials capture more and more cps.

The fighter squadron idea is also good.

Re: Space Combat 2142

There are definitely good concepts here, but ArcAngel, its extremely difficult to read a huge mass of small white text on a black background, so it tends to dissuade people from reading it. I read it all nonetheless, but most people probably wont. You should space between every sentence or so.

Anyway, the stuff for decompression is an ok idea, but the imperial stormtroopers are already wearing hostile environment suits and the ship is undoubtedly prepared for just such an occasion with blast doors, pressurization controls and everything.

And if you're making it like a real star destroyer, there ain't exactly going to be many people hanging around in the "hallway of death" if all the others dont have the same problem....

For example, say your star destroyer interior is tiny, with a bridge and three hallways, 2 hallways of which are vulnerable to decompression.

Problem is is that people like me would definitely avoid the hallways that could be destroyed, especially when the star destroyer is under heavy fire.

Id like to see more of a focus on the basics of space battles. How about a giant star destroyer versus a whole fleet of frigates and blockade runners?

One of the best ideas I think for people in star destroyers and like is that for every person manning a turbolaser for example, there are several turrets that actually fire where he is aimed.

So rather than aiming and firing one small turbolaser, perhaps 5 located at different points on the star destroyer will all fire at different angles to hit the target you're aiming at.

Would be very neat for having green flak going everywhere, but the flak like in real life concentrates on where the person is aiming, near an enemy starship or fighter.

This would be useful as most mods rarely have very large servers running most of the time, so even 20 players could create a very epic feeling space battle, as each one is controlling 5 or 6 turrets instead of one, making ships sprout fire much more like in the movies.

Re: Space Combat 2142

Good points there. Empty gunning stations would really degrade the intensity of the mod, so one guy controling a whole bank sounds like a good idea to me.
As for the decompression, I was thinking. Instead of just teh guys suffocating inside, might it be possible to have invisible explosions (that do no damage) placed strategically to launch people in the hallway out (or at least a few). That would certaintly be a satisfying effect for rebel pilots, wathing teh imps fly out.
But these new titan influenced star battles do have one thing that might make them a tad odd. GC had gravity in space, I'm sure you noticed If you ever bailed outa a fighter. I think I heard it said that FS will not (think). How does this effect the likkle dudes walking inside ships?

Re: Space Combat 2142

If FS had 5% gravity it would be similar to having no gravity when flying but you would still be able to walk around in ships. It would look funny to see people jumping and hitting their heads on the hanger bay ceiling though. Maybe jumping can be disabled or reduced for space maps if there is low gravity.
