Some people STILL use the arrow keys instead of their mouse or joystick... I think it is easier to pull up with the arrow keys. But yea it would be nice to be able to control the canopy.

I think this is how it works:
Player presses "e"
- Cockpit closes
Player lifts of ground (speed increases, height increases)
- Landing gear retracts

<<Lots of cool stuff here>>

Player lands (slows down, height decreses)
  - Landing gear retract
Player presses "e"
  -canopy opens

It's kind of a moot point as far as landing gear for Cockpits goes. With 2142 Vehicles can have animation sets, so you can do a whole bunch of cool looking animations triggered in your own time. Or so it would seem so far at least.
