Topic: Crash Landings

I'm sorry if this has been brought up already or if its just a terribly dumb idea but here it goes. One thing about the BF series is that crash, or emergency landings are very hard if it all possible to make. I'm not terribly found of being able to just fly over an air field and then get your airplane repaired. Something that I think would be pretty cool would be crash landings. Even more so in a Star Wars setting with a lack of parachutes. Some might say that crash landings are incredibly hard to survive, but I hate how in BF games when you touch the ground you explode. Now I'm not a pilot so I don't know if its at all feasable but I think its something that could be considered. I don't know exactly how it could be implemented, but maybe the damage an aircraft takes when it touches the ground could be lessened. Damage would still be done, but I don't think the craft has to start on fire right away, and I also think the pilot should take some damage. It could vary between alot of damage and a little depending on how fast they were going and the angle the landing took. It could just be totally random aswell, I don't know which one is easier to do. Thanks for reading, and sorry if its been discussed.

Re: Crash Landings

Well its been discussed an eensy weensy tiny bit. Its a very good concept, after all, Luke did it in the movies...twice...though I'm not really sure how it could be implemented. It would be a little wierd if your wing clips a mountain and you only take a wee bit of damage.
Awhile ago I suggested making damage effect a fighter's handling. So if your snow speeder is bashed to hell, instead of it just flying normal and trailing smoke, its juking all over, making it extremely difficult to take any shots, forcing you to get to a repair station. And I also suggested that if your fighter's critically damaged the 'bleed time' (the time when its on fire and the last bit of health is draining away) is alot longer, like 30 seconds long. This virtually forces the pilot to desperately be looking around for a place to crash land so he can get out (as theres no chutes, and I think they did something to stop bail suicides). It dosn't make the actual crash landing any easier but...

!!HOLY FREAKING FISH SPAGHETTI WITH BANANA SAUCE I'M BACK!!
Simple way to implement this: Invisible landing gear. When you slow down to a certian speed, it pops up and dampens the landing damage to 0.  Tada! Now you can do awesome landing shizzle!

Re: Crash Landings

Well why not use the actual landing gear? If I was trying to crash land I would.
I don't think it should be any easier to make a crash landing than it is to land on a runway. And if damage caused juking, it would be harder. Which is good, do you want every 'kill' you get to escape by landing seconds before his craft explodes? It should be very hard to do, for even the best of pilots. But when you do do it, it would seem all the cooler.

Re: Crash Landings

One of the most fun things about the GC Hoth map was that, very rarely, your snowspeeder would be severly damaged but not destroyed.  BF1942 had a point in the damage of a craft where the engines would shut down and it would just coast and loose health until it exploded.

So basically if your snowspeeder reached this but didn't explode, you could coast and steer it down to a fairly safe landing much like what happened in the movies.  I would love to see the devs make a medium-sized area in the Hit Points of a ship so that it would shut down and be 'dead in space' for a period of time before exploding (or being shot to hell by the enemy).
