Topic: For Space battles: total squad seperation

I mentioned a basic idea of this in the squad skins thread but i'll expand it here.

The basic idea of this is to get people working together as a squad in space battles and not induvidually. It also aims to discourage squad hopping by forming the squad into a unit, who you'll ideally be working with for the rest of the round and even other rounds. Obviously the members will change as people leave, but hopefully it should stop people joining squads temporarily. Firstly, you'll need to re-enable squad switching while alive for this to work.

I'll take a typical MC cruiser v ISD battle for an example. The squads will be pre-made ath the beginning of the round. The squads will be named by the ships they use. They'll be fighter squads and assault squads (for assaulting the enemy capship with troops). Anyone who wishes to pilot capships or use turrets will be a lone wolf.

Fighter Squads

The first to join a squad is the leader. Eveyrone who joins a fighter squad can only spawn in their squad's dedicated hangar. The door will be locked, so they can't get out and others can't get in. In the squad will be 6 of the fighter. The whole hangar will act as a repair/rearm area. The ships will spawn in sixes once every minute. If one is missing from a spawn point, another will spawn. If not, then it wont spawn. So every minute the hangar will restock itself to have 6 fighters. Now, what do you do while waiting for a fighter? They'll be anti-fighter turret stations and small tractor (EMP) beams in the hangar, so you can aid your teammates until your fighter respawns. If you get tired of a paticular fighter, you simply leave the squad, join another, and you can spawn into a new hangar or be a lone wolf.

Assault Squads

They'll all share a hangar, with numerous assault craft inside. Each will sit 6 (12 could be done, but would be too easy to kill). Assault squads will spawn into this hangar, with a locked door like before, but they'll all share the shuttle/transport. They then fly over to an enemy hangar (hopefully escorted by fighter squads) and land. Their shuttle can then become a mobile spawn point, like Battlefront. Otherwise its too hrd to attack properly, as you would only get one life before having to fly over again and they would get unlimited.

Lone Wolves

Lone Wolves dont get access to any hangars (unless one is breached by the enemy) and are in charge of defense. They get acess to the rest of the ship, and include capship pilots, gunners and tractor beamers. They're also repsonsible for defending the halls of the ship as infantry in case of invasion.

--

This squad system is fully adaptible. For example, if all your hangars are destroyed, everyone could become lone wolves in order to defend the corridors. If more bombers are needed, lone wolves could fill an unused bomber squadron. people can leave one squad and joina nother (assuming its not full) at any time when they want to switch role. Also, the commander has a better idea of whos doing what.

I somewhat like this, but I want to be able to get in any ship whenever I want... If all the fighter squads are full I still want to be able to get one.

Seems a little restricting considering Bf is about doing whatever you want.

The idea is to have lots of squads though, so one should always be free. What I meant aout full squads is meant for A-Wings, B-Wings and Interceptors, which there will be less of.

Re: For Space battles: total squad seperation

Have to agree with TY2D2...I somewhat like that idea, too.
But ( big_smile ):
Why don't make basic squad types?
Something like:
Navy Squads: Controlling capital ships and small freighter class ships like YT-1300 e.g. ; able to spawn on the capital ships and on the bridge and the locations of turrets
Star Fighter Corps Squads: Able to spawn in the hangars of a ship (no restrictions of usable fighter craft, everyone can feel free to choose the craft he wants to use at that moment); responsible for using the ship's fighters
Troop Squads: Responsible for defending the capital ships and assaulting enemy ships or stations; could maybe be used as gunners, too, so that the Navy guys are only responsible for commanding the ship and maybe repairing key sections of the ship

Would be a good solution in my mind. smile

Although it makes it less likely for people to fly as a squad, your soloution is better for overall gameplay.

Re: For Space battles: total squad seperation

Perhaps each hangar could have more than 1 type of fighter?  Perhaps it could have a core of say x-wings and have a few a-wings for example. I think it would be even better if y-wings had a-wings in the same hanger so that they could communicate and get better support as it would be difficult for two squads to communicate unless they had teamspeak or vent.

That brings up something else. I wonder what first strike will do for communication, like if they might have some inbuilt team communication more than just squad communication. Perhaps one button was  squad communication and another team communication.
