Yea there were battles before yavin.  Lots in fact.  Notice in the opening scroll of ANH , how it says the rebels have won their 1st battle against the empire (or somethin to that effect) ...meaning the Empire kicked some serious pie beforehand wink

Yavin 4 is not a planet. It is a jungle moon that obits the planet of Yavin. The rebels made a secret base out of the Massassi temples and such.
