I'm with you Woody. I never buy brand new parts just because they have all the latest features. I just got a new rig and it runs great. Besides, new games will still support DX 9. It's not like everyone's machines won't work just because a new technology is released.
I just paid $250 for a really great card, and would never spend more than $350 for a graphics card. It's just not smart to buy the high-end cards, when you'll probably need a new one in a year or two anyway.
No, older cards WILL NOT support the new DirectX standard- it cannot be updated via a patch, it has to be hard coded in the CPU/PPU of the card, in which is not backwards compatible with existing cards.
