Then the ships wouldn't be pulled down by gravity in space maps, only the repulsors would be able to do that. But the ships would still be pulled down by gravity on ground maps.

and how do they not crash into the earth, cause the gravity pulls at the vehicles, so they need something to reverse the pull in push, so the anti gravity field
I think George Lucas told it in the special edtion, during the first shots in 1977, they had some kind of color under the vehicles, landspeeder it is, and they called it a forcefield
...that color wuz cause they didnt have good photoshop skillz and they just painted in orange to erase the wheels ^^ i dont think its quite anti-gravity but who am i to know =P
