Also, with the destructible components:

Have a huge "Status Board" on the bridge.  It would have a light at each station.  When the station was undamaged the light would be gree, when it's damged, yellow and when it's destroyed, red.  The lights could be coded as a form of smoke.

ooo that ones nice! would make it feel like a tense but organized battle. I think one thing that might be sool is to have a weapons officer position that controls the ships heavy laser cannons, so he can aim them all on one position. The rest of the weapons should probally be singley aimed tho.

Yeah.  So each heavy laser turret is individually controlled, to defend against fighet attacks and suicide A-Wings (I WILL try that as soon as I get this mod) while the turbolasers are contolled by one guy, who uses them for attacking enemy capital ships.

Well I think the different weapons being vehicals would work, but what about the lights? I can't think of a way to link an action down at a blast door or flag with a light on the bridge.

The engine would see it as a form of smoke.  In BF2, smoke is coded to look like real smoke and come from the engine.  In FS, the status board will always be in the exact same position compared to each component, so it could be coded so that smoke looks like a flashing light and that it comes out at the status board.
