Exactly.  If the AT-ATs were destroyed after destorying the power generator (not the shield generaton, contrary to popular belief), the Star Destroyers would have bombarded the base.

it is possible it is the main generator, and not the shieldgenerator, but when the they destroyed the generator, they needed a back up generator to power the base and why place a main generator outside the base --> heating?

They couldn't fit it inside the base due to "geological conditions", which probably means solid rock.
